Default 2 Week Birthday Beer Festival

LIVERPOOL is celebrating its 800th birthday with a two-week beer festival.

Organised by the Campaign for Real Ale, it will be launched on August 28 – the city’s birthday – in a host of pubs across Liverpool.

Organisers said it is not too late for pubs to get involved in the event which will run until September 16.

Birthday organisers hope other city pubs will join in the general festivities planned for the big day itself.

Special 800th birthday bunting and beer mats will be handed out to pubs holding a party during the birthday bank holiday weekend or on August 28 itself.

Liverpool Chamber of Commerce’s Peter Jones said: “We want all pubs who want to take part to get in touch with us.”

CAMRA will also hold a real ale tasting at the August 28 party planned for Old Hall Street.

Pubs already signed up to the two-week beer festival include the Philharmonic, Rigbys, the Baltic Fleet, the Belvedere Arms, the Fly In The Loaf and the Dispensary. Pub groups such as Wetherspoons, Mitchell & Butler and Punch Taverns also confirmed support.

The Grapes in Mathew Street and the Lord Nelson in Knotty Ash are among those staging birthday parties to celebrate the big day.

Anyone who wants to get involved in the beer festival, or pubs wanting to hold a birthday bash, should call 0151-227 1234 and ask to speak to Peter Jones or Joe Curran.

I shall drink to that (hic). I reckon that here in Liverpool we can hold our beer better than most of the English oikes who pay up then throw up in quick succession.
Of course there's the usual bravado and aggressive posturing from young men (it's protective rather than aggressive so I am told). Of course we get the flamboyance of the girls on their nights out; the latter certainly add to the great amosphere.
Generally speaking we're well behaved, friendly and mutually supportive. A nice combination. The best of British - the best of the European drinking culture (generally speaking). So where better than Liverpool to hold it?
