gorgeous 08-04-2007, 06:10 PM Please can anyone locate 33 Barter St liverpool , Pitt St Ward 8.
I can't find a Barter St listed in the A/Z. i'ts apparently near or between Hurst St & Orford St .
It would be a bonus if anyone can tell me who lived there in any of the directories available . & when it was demolished .
Many thanks
Love Karen xx
PhilipG 08-04-2007, 06:28 PM Barter Street was off South Road, next to Miles Street, but both the 1936 and 1968 directories list only 29 houses (and the old maps confirm that was all it ever had).
When it was first built it was called Exchange Street, but the name was changed in the 1860s because there was an Exchange Street in Liverpool.
robbo176 08-04-2007, 06:37 PM Hi Karen
I have a street atlas from early 70's & Barter St is between Clevedon Street & South Street
PhilipG 08-04-2007, 06:54 PM Sorry, I didn't say, but Barter Street has gone now, with new property (1980s?), and a landscaped area, on the site.
gorgeous 08-04-2007, 07:21 PM Thanks Mandy , thanks Philip ,
Do you know if this Barter st /possibly Barter La , was situated near Orford St & Dukes pl, Pitt st ward 8 ?
Thanks for your help .

gorgeous 08-04-2007, 07:27 PM Huia ( from New Zealand ) Has just e mailed me to say on the 1851 census Barter st/la was situated by Dukes pl, Garden st, Orford st ,
She is happy to do look ups on the New Zealand bmd or their electoral list.if you require any .
PhilipG 08-04-2007, 07:39 PM I don't know about 1851, but by 1936 there was only one Barter Street listed in the street directory.
I must admit I still don't know what period you were interested in.
(In future, I must ask before doing all this checking!).
gorgeous 08-04-2007, 07:48 PM Hiya Philip ,
I'm a little bit confused by the info she has given us , in my A/Z There's an Orford st listed .it's supposedly around the Hanover st area . but i can't see it . , I've never heard of an Orford st around Miles St though , but I'm like the blind leading the blind , lol she's looking at 1851/61 period.
Love Karen x
robbo176 08-04-2007, 07:51 PM Hi Karen
Dukes Pl is close to the Dukes dock & Orford St is close to Wapping I can't find any Garden Street close to them on my maps but I don't have one from around 1851
Mandy :)

robbo176 08-04-2007, 08:13 PM Hiya Karen
the only Barter Street I can see is the one by South St
have a look on these Street indexes, I use them when I'm trying to read census addresses

I'll have to buy a new disc for 1938 as mine cracked :PDT_Xtremez_12:
gorgeous 08-04-2007, 08:18 PM Mandy ,
Thanks for all your help,
Hey feel free to ask for any look ups or if it'll copy i'll send you one . i'm trying to get around him to order them now ,especially as there on offer .
love Karen xx
PhilipG 08-04-2007, 09:09 PM I've found Barter Street, but it was swept away in the 1850s by which time the Wapping Dock and the Wapping Basin were built close by, and Wapping itself was re-routed. Wapping Warehouse (completed 1856) is probably on the exact site of Barter Street.
gorgeous 08-04-2007, 09:18 PM Hiya Philip .
Your a star , Thanks for taking the time to search for us .
Philip , was it you who took some lovely photo's of Park Rd in the snow ?
I used to work in Park Chemist , sadly that's also gone now . but they were lovely photo's , there was one of Dr Canters , & Lacy's roofing etc .

gorgeous 08-04-2007, 11:01 PM Well Philip,
What fantastic photo's, I've only popped back on here to let you know i love what i've looked at so far , i've been looking at the Bold St interveiws, enjoyed them all but especially Looks bag shop one as i know Phil & his Dad who own it ,
Philip , love the Dingle tram sheds , do you remember the name of the church a few hundred yds up towards Ullet Rd /Aigburth rd . i think it's where a Dr's surgery is now ,just before the old Parkfield Garage /auctions . what church was it ? Also Do you remember the huge victorian houses on the corner of Ullet & / the Elms / Belvidere Rd . Wonder why on earth they were demolished .
Oh found another photo i like now , Bold St in the snow , i must have a thing for photo's taken in the snow as i'm after Rodney St in the snow by Frank Green for chrimbo. Favourite so far , Park Rd again the one in the snow . :handclap::handclap::handclap:
PhilipG 08-05-2007, 12:42 PM The church was Toxteth Congregational.
Built 1871. Demolished 1971.
Here's part of an 1836 map showing Barter Street.
PhilipG 08-06-2007, 06:25 PM The streets above Hurst Street remain, but all those below were swept away, except for Duke's Place, which survives to this day.
gorgeous 08-08-2007, 02:44 AM Hi Philip ,
I couldn't log on again the other night to say thankyou ,Hope you don't think i'd just disappeared ,
