WORK has started on a sailing club destroyed in an arson attack, thanks to a £500,000 grant.
Liverpool Sailing Club has been homeless since the blaze five years ago at its boathouse near the old Speke Airport.
Now groundwork has begun on rebuilding it after Sport England handed over cash for the ambitious project. Added to European funding it means the club has raised the £1.25m it needs for its plans for a new building on the banks of the Mersey.

If you can ignore the comedy knob and other examples youth expressionism, Garston Coastal Reserve Park is a beautiful addition to Liverpool's parks and grounds.

4 years and 5 million pounds later, the area has been transformed into a walker's paradise along the coast, feet away from the River Mersey than runs upto Speke Hall and probably beyond.

Terry 07-16-2006, 03:28 PM What a delightful & tranquil area Kev.Always nice to have places like this to go to particularly if you need to escape the hustle & bustle of city life.It really makes you appreciate what we have on our doorstep. On the 4th picture down is that an old Trawler or Dredger btw.
Its nice to know that even within our cities you don't have to wander too far to find solitude with the choice of Parks,Coastal Paths & Gardens close by.Sad though that we are still left with reminders of who we have to share this planet with.:snf (41):
Once the place has had time to 'bed in' I'm hopeful that the incidents of vandalism will decrease. Shame that the kids living in the area don't know how to treat them. I grew up in and around that area too but would never had poured paint over something like that, maybe we would have done, who knows......
I'm going to get along the other end to have a look at the boat house being rebuilt.
Paul D 07-16-2006, 04:43 PM Great photos Kev I'll have to get myself down there soon.:PDT_Piratz_26:
Great photos Kev I'll have to get myself down there soon.:PDT_Piratz_26:
U can't beat it on a sunny day, look-out point is great! (were the stones are located). To the left is the boat house that should be completed soon with a jetty into the River :celb (23):
I've been keen to get closer to this development for some time now and after a long walk I eventually got there, about 20 mins from the Garston Coastal Park (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14362&postcount=76) entrance. Liverpool Sailing Club (http://www.liverpoolsailingclub.org/first%20page.htm) are a family based club first formed in 1958. Currently, they are replacing their old clubhouse with a multi- million pound building that will provide fantastic facilities for all water sports.

Hi Kev
What's the story about the flying object seen behind the biker? Something he is pulling along, a plane taking off, or just some artifact on the photograph? :unibrow:
Oh, .... I see (answering my own query) it must be that wind machine thing near the sailing club.

Yep, thanks, phredd. I have just amended my post, realizing it is the wind turbine that Kev shows in his first photograph in the series, although it looks a bit disembodied at a distance in the heat haze, maybe because of the dust the bike rider is kicking up as well.
Chris
^^I see what u mean Chris^^ Thanks for the comments, that is Liverpool Sailing Club, there hasn't been much going on since my last visit (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showpost.php?p=24745&postcount=2) (November 2006).

We’re hoping future will be plain sailing
Feb 7 2008 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo
LIVERPOOL Sailing Club plans to celebrate its golden anniversary by returning to the water – eight years after arsonists torched the club.
The Speke clubhouse was vandalised and burned down in 2000.
The attack meant supporters had to raise £1.25m to rebuild the site.
Now a new iconic and ecologically-sound clubhouse is taking shape boasting a wind turbine.
And club bosses hope, after spending £25,000 on clearing the slipway of mud, members will once again take to the water to celebrate both its 50th anniversary and Capital of Culture year. Liverpool Sailing Club is run by volunteers. President Tom Workman said: “We’ve received about £1.1m from Sport England, European money and bits and pieces of donations and fund-raising.
“We’ve got the ground floor finished now and we’re applying for another £300,000 which would mean we could get the lift in and finish the other two floors.”
Over its 50-year history the club has worked alongside the city council to launch the Mersey River Festival.
It also ran the Mersey Raft Race with Merseyside police raising more than £500,000 for charities and hosted its own Tideway and Head of the River races.
Over the past seven years the sailing club and its partner Merseyside Youth Challenge Trust used a fleet of land yachts to teach youngsters the principles of sailing, and provided sailing opportunities using the Liverpool Marina-based MYCT flagship the Liver Bird.
The initiative is now being extended under the banners of Youth Afloat for 13 to 19-year-olds, and All Aboard covering other age groups.
