Interesting to hear, Joe. By the way I see that on ebay right now there is a repro circa 1888 photograph of The Great Eastern (http://cgi.ebay.com/Great-Eastern-amazing-photo-20-16-Brunel-356-/350202439992?pt=UK_Collectables_Photographs_MJ&hash=item5189b12938) "at the end of its life, being broken for scrap on the River Mersey in 1888."

I agree about the fact we have no major ship as a floating attraction, considering how important our maritime heritage is.

I would like to see a replica of the Alabama moored in the Salthouse Dock.

The CSS Alabama was built on the Mersey, but I don't think it ever sailed from Liverpool.

The blockade running was from Nassau to Charlseton and Wilmington. Goods crossed the Atlantic legally to the Bahamas in regular freighters.

There must be another classic ship that used Liverpool frequently....

While I cannot claim to know the full sailing history of the CSS Alabama, I believe you are correct that apart from having been built on the Mersey, she never returned.
