I had a recent conversation with an elderly woman who said she used to live opposite the Anglican catherdal on the street between the David Lewis Theatre and "The Blackie"

She said that during the construction of the cathedral, they ran short of money and in order to raise funds people went 'round the houses asking the married women to donate their wedding rings. That many were given and the gold melted down to raise money for the construction work.

I know that much of the cathedral was built as a result of subscriptions or donations from wealthy families The Rathbones (Arch) The Vesteys (Tower) and others. The wedding ring story seems very far fetched to me and is either

a) A folk myth
b) An elaborate scam by theives playing on peoples naievety and faith.

Can any one verify or refute the Wedding Ring collection story

I remember giving pennies at school, towards the construction of the Catholic cathedral(original design),so it's not inconceivable, but I'd suspect the scam theory would be nearer the mark!

Good post armchair. I've not heard of this myself but am sure someone here will know.
