This is mould on the carpet of Odeon 2 in London Road, just before demolition. The whole floor was squelchy and the air rank with decay!

Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, who went through similar effects as Liverpool being in the USA's Rust Belt, introduced Land Valuation taxation that cleared up derelict buildings. The landowners paid full tax whether occupied or not. They either:

Improved the property and put it into good use
Sold to others who could put it to goof use

In the UK a derelict building with a hole in the roof pays Nothing in tax. But the land values keep rising. They waiting until the times is right, could be many years or decades, and then sell.

During that recession, House & Home, the construction industry’s leading trade journal, recommended that other cities prevent land bubbles by doing what Pittsburgh was doing — taxing land values more heavily than building values. It quoted Pennsylvania governor and former Pittsburgh mayor David L. Lawrence as saying: “There is no doubt in my mind that the graded tax law has been a good thing for the city of Pittsburgh. It has discouraged the holding of vacant land for speculation and provides an incentive for building improvements.”

Link to article (http://feasta.org/documents/fleeing_vesuvius/?p=167)

Liverpool needs to adopt this form of taxation ASAP. However the city needs to lobby the LibDems (big fans) to push it through.

I'll add a few later. It's amazing how many derelict properties are lying around, quite a few council owned too.

A Georgian property on the corner of Everton Road and Plumpton Street which has a very ornate curved balcony to the rear which would have stunning views over the city. The owners of this should really be made to do something with it.

A crying shame these buildings are left in this state.....didn't the Liverpool Echo used to have a campaign going? and what happened to the planned restoration of Anfield Cemetery?

I'm not sure about the rules - does 'valid for this month's theme' mean that the buildings must be decaying at the time they were posted? If so, there's at least one here that's not currently so afflicted... So it's not quite such a bleak picture as is being portrayed...

Hi John

As far as I know, the thread is for photographs of decaying buildings, preferably on Merseyside, but they don't have to be current photographs. Perhaps someone can correct this impression if I am wrong.

What a fine house it must once have been.........wonder how it escaped the bulldozers of the 60s/70s?

I don't know why it's been left in such a state for so long. The house stands alone long after other buildings were demolished. Maybe they can't trace the owners.

Land Registry will show the owners. I was tracing one last week.

I bought my house off a bloke who didn't know he'd inherited a load of houses in Orrell Park. I'm in the process of selling it at the moment and the Covenant that is on the land is mentioned in the HIP I had done when it first went on the market. I'm 99.9% certain it was a relative of the original builder we bought it off.

less than 2 hours left lol.

Gonna be a slight change to the rules for the winner. I know it sounds a bit confusing but the winner of this months challenge will pick July's winner and the theme for August.

Just gives us more time to contact them to arrange things. Will announce the theme for July on Friday
