Hi there,

I am making a Memory book for my Nana who has Alzheimer's.

Does anyone have or know how I can get pictures of Summer Garden's in Liverpool before it was demolished? It was a housing estate that she grew up in until 1970 when she moved.

If anyone can help, that would be great.

Thanks

If there's a photo of it, your best bet will be Ged's site.

Thanks Rhoobarb. I've had a look at my pictures folder as they're all alphabetical and I can't see it, however, it rings a bell. Which main road was it off Blonde, do you know?

1938 Kellys Directory lists only Summer Seat and also Sumner St (off Hopwood St)

I'm not sure, Ged. I saw a mention of it on a website but with no picture but it did mention a pub round the corner from it. The 'Grapes.'

Yes, then it's the one i'm thinking of because there was a Grapes on the corner of Westminster Road and Sellars St. I will keep looking.

Right, found it, hiding in my pubs folder.

Summer Gardens is seen here named on the side of the Grapes Inn pub with its old property that ran up towards Fountains Road but was a dead end. That is Westminster Road baths on the right, where I learned to swim. The pub was known as Ivy Sloans and the pic was taken around 1960.

Use the blue scroll bar below the pic to see it in full.

Thank you so much Ged. Your a Star. So is that part of Summer Gardens on the left then?

Thanks blonde and it's a pleasure. Yes, there's a nameplate on the wall on the side of the pub. That row of houses was in Summer Gardens.

My in-laws live less than a mile away so I was down there today. Here is the baths today, long since closed and new property on Sellar Street. Summer Gardens i'm afraid was built over quite a while ago.

I had a few ancestors who lived in Summer Seat..........and other grand sounding addresses...... when in truth they were slums.

Use the F3 key on your pc and type in Westminster Road in the little pop up box.

Bootle`s Summer Seat ,off Strand Rd. no houses just work places

Summer Gardens was known locally as "Mucky Ben" when I was a lad. Maybe because it had gardens
which was a bit unusual in the area.
