I've noticed for a while a distinct lack of any regional accents in the media. Its strange that the country seems forever trying to gain a sense of identity, yet seems intent on removing any trace of a regional accent, unless they are being portrayed as a popular stereotype or by an actor.

There also seems to be a nondescript accent that has slowly crept into popular culture over the last few years along with a fake 'down to earth-ness' that no longer seems to belong to the very people 'being down to earth' would have previously described, those with regional accents. (I'm rambling now.....:PDT_Xtremez_42:)

During the 1980's/ early 90's TV and films were awash with regional accents.

Were have they all gone and why? What's this nondescript accent that has slowly crept into popular culture over the last few years?

I think due to the fact people travel more now and there is far more television available that accents are being lost. My son sometimes sounds American due to the amount of Nickjr he watches.
