View Full Version : sales phone calls
My phone rang at 810pm, I knew when I went to get it it'd be sales as everyone else rings my mobile and my mum wouldnt call in Eastenders.
Voice on the other end - I'm from some mobile company or another. I say I'm tied to a contract so not interested.
She says thats fine but can she just ask me how many free minutes and texts I get. I say more than I need and she really is wasting her time as I'm not going to but whatever she's selling.
She tells me she's not trying to sell me anything, just wants to tell me about an offer they get. I lose it at this point and say I dont appreciate being disturbed on a Friday night when I've had a hard week at work and pissed off because I cant go out as my wife got in there first and I have to babysit, and what has she got to gain from just telling me something. I then slam the phone down.
How else do people deal with these calls? I read an article somewhere of two great things to do to annoy them, but havent had the nerve to try yet:-
1) Say yep, mmm, ok, etc for about half an hour as they do the speel, then say "I'm still not interested". As they are on commission that really makes them lose their rag.
2) Say its not convenient to talk just now but can they give me their home number and tell me what time they get in from wotk and have their tea, and I'll call them around then.

Exactly the same way as you Ste...Sod them off mate..
Good for you..
Now do yer wanna know what the Jehovah's Witnesses got last time after I warned them about knocking on my door over and over again.
2 words..The 1st one begins with F...A very LOUD F as well.
steveb 07-20-2007, 09:19 PM I beleive there is an organisation you can sign upto for free which stops
most of these type of calls, Iam signed up to it but can't remember the name
What I do is ask who they are, if they are trying to sell me stuff I just tell
them in no uncertain terms, I'm not interested, go away and if they call again
I will report them, same sort of approach I have for door to door sales
shytalk 07-20-2007, 09:22 PM I haven't been bothered by them since I have been on VOIP, about two and a half years. I guess the number isn't listed anywhere as there is no 'phone line.
Before that if the telemarketer was female I politely asked which town she was located in, then I would say I would be passing through there next week and perhaps I could get a B*** job, they usually hung up pretty quick. If it was male I used to ask if he was interested in casual gay sex, I did get some offers.
My ex wife used to go nuts about the way I talked to them, she said I could get in trouble for making naughty 'phone calls, I couldn't see how because it was them who called me.:PDT_Xtremez_12:

Thanks for that, yes TPS that is the one...
shytalk 07-20-2007, 11:16 PM It's not as bad as it used to be here, you can be put on a 'no call' list. The govt. do fine heavily telemarketers that offend. I don't hear too many people complaining about it in the last few years since the list started.

Yes TPS is a similar system were you can sign up on line enter your
phone number and TPS make sure your number is removed from the
lists that firms use, it has cut my calls down to nearly zero wereas
before I was getting 4 or 5 a week usualy around tea time
MarkA 07-21-2007, 01:06 AM SteH, I've never personally suffered a cold call at home but I've answered someone else's. I've taken some for my brother-in-law and found that they don't call back when you say...James ********. Sorry, he doesn't live here anymore as he's dead*
*He's not like, although if he carries on drinking like he does...
Kolchak 07-21-2007, 03:13 PM I once had one of those ones who try to sell you something cheap,if you'd just be a 'show home', so I kept her going for a while, showing real interest in the double glazing and patios etc, she wasn't too pleased when she asked for my address though, I told her I was living in a motor home and could come to her!
Another one I asked (whispering)to be quiet as I was at a funeral and the casket was going in..I felt a bit sorry for her as she did clear the line with profuse apologies!
When you answer the phone just say these little words "can you hold on for a minute" put the receiver down go and do what you are doing. Eventually check that you have a BT tone and out phone down.
The other one is to send the junk pre paid envelopes back empty or even better put other companies info in and send back. :)

I have done that plenty of times, great idea, the only thing is it is usually pre-approved credit card stuff, the interest they charge they can well afford the postage I cost them.
Having worked in a double glazing call centre (embrassed smiley needed) whilst being a student the best responses to these calls are:
1. Sign up to the TPS.
2. Explain to the person calling you would like to be removed from the list. (This can take up to 3 months to happen, and does require a manager signing some paper - so doesn't always happen). Sometimes better to ask for an address of the company and put it in writing yourself.
The best wind up we ever witness was we called some guy who answered yes to all the questions and hence got passed to the manager for a follow-up call. He then said he couldn't speak (seemed like a genuine customer) and would call our manager back at a more convient time. The manager passed on his mobile number and then got constant phone calls at 2am every morning wanting to discuss free double glazing.
Needless to say that guy got removed from the list immediately.

Cadfael 07-25-2007, 04:22 PM When i get a 'cold' call, I usually put the phone to my PC speaker and play some ear splitting music.
I have to say that Jehovas Witnesses don't bother me - I'll talk to em for 5 mins because out of all of the bad people in the world, although they are annoying, they are only trying to spread the word on what a good life we should lead. I'll give you that they turn up when you're in the bath or the like but on the whole, I don't tell em where to go, normally I ask them why JW's proclaimed that man would never go to the Moon and that starts their downfall :PDT_Aliboronz_24:
snappel 07-25-2007, 04:48 PM Get out the bath, invite them in, drop your towel. Job done!
Would that work, on the hole?
