SFX Annexe.. used as a secondary school for the main SFX on Salisbury St when I went there 1969-71ish


The 'Grim' bit made me laugh in the description on the photo.. it was top notch inside that school.. spotless.
Still remember the smell of scotch glue in the top floor woodwork classroom...
and Johnny Nash the main PE teacher from the main school taking french lessons..

Thanks for that Gerard ! I thought you went to St Gregory's ? I still can't remember the School, my Aunt lived in Haig st in the 50/60s !

I thought the entrance to SFX infants was in Haigh street? That's the way I went in anyway! :D

Mind you it was waaaay back in the 1950s!

To the left of the photo Lizzie1 you can make out a doorway on Haig St...that was the little tunnel entrance to the playground...that was the ONLY entrance and exit to the school when I went there, at least I cant remember using an entrance on Shaw St...


I have fond memories of inside that tunnel... memories of speaking with 2 lads from Kensington named John and Terry ...they were never apart..the best of mates since infants through to leaving school....Terry was killed in a car crash in a mini bus just coming out the Mersey Tunnel Birkenhead side, some might remember it in the Echo...John ..(Big JR..) is now married to my cousin and is my best mate.....

It could be my memory playing tricks Lizzie....there must have been a front entrance, I probably never used it because I had no need to...the tunnel entrance in Haigh St did me as I went home down past the 4 squares to where I lived around Gerard Gardens.

i attended S F X college `1948/52 on Salisbury St. The S F X school on Haigh St was an elementary school and had nothing to do with the college. The Prep school for the college was in Woolton where the college is now,moving in 1953/4 from Salisbury St.
If your parents had a few bob their sons would be sent there,moving to the college at the age of 11. There was a percentage of places available for 11 plus scolarship winners at the college,of which I was one.

My route to SFX everyday..

(And not once did I step on a crack in the paving flags..!!..)

It took me ages to remember Ged..

One of the people who had the pub had another on Islington..
and another the top of London Rd...
the pub on Islington was between Norton St and Stafford St
it blew up due to a gas bottle explosion..

anybody know the name of that pub ?

The building on the right was also used by SFX school..

we had our Technical Drawing lessons upstairs in there..
it later became a function rooms for weddings etc..


And the pub in the photo I asked could anybody name..?

It was The Grapes..

The Haig St building Joe was called the SFX Annexe...when I went there anyway..


I also said it was a secondary school to the main SFX school on Salisbury St
in my original post.. :)

I'm just saying Joe what it was called when I went there...
it was part of the main SFX big school.. very much so
we had History, French, and Woodworking lessons in the Annexe.. amongst other lessons.
taught by teachers from the SFX main school on Salisbury Street...
just to clear things up on how the school operated when I went there...

In 1961 the college was transferred as a grammar school to its present twenty-six acre site at High Lee, Woolton.

The School was still in Salisbury Street after this date, I take it there were two schools named SFX, am I right ??

Corrrect, I had the bright blue SFX blazer with the SFX crest on the pocket....
and I attended both schools. and was taught by the same teachers in both.

The headmaster was a Charlie Traynor.. one b******...
There were a few loons that carried their sticks everywhere and terrified the boys for
larking about on the corridors...I remember seeing movies in the main hall, we'd pay in to see the likes of 'Goodbye Mr Chips'...the lessons were great what I remember, the school was great overall.. the annexe part was a small building, I dont think it had many classrooms from what I remember. SFX was a great school, it was very strict...VERY strict....I got a bit of a shock when I left for St Gregs and the lads I knew went bevvieing with the school teachers in the Farmers Arms on Roscommon St in the dinner hour...the 2 schools were only a few hundred yards apart, they were a million miles apart as far as education went..

Mick Groves was born in the City of Salford nr Manchester. After his schooldays he went to Hopwood Hall Teacher Training College. He then began teaching in Liverpool. He followed this profession for six years in various secondary schools ending up as Head of Science at St Fancis Xaviers Bi-Lateral Boys before leaving to go on the road with The Spinners.
