Hi Lindy

I assume the staircase is part of partly demolished railway station, is that right? Might I ask where the photograph was taken?

Llandudno. I noticed it when we were walking along the pier.
I think the staircase was once leading down from the 'Grand Hotel'

Will have a closer look next time I go. We often go to Llandudno on days out.
Not sure if there is a disused rail track on the other side.

OH NO

have they really demolished the grand hotel?

I went to landudno nearly every year as a child and loved playing and crab fishing on the pier.

What a shame they have demolished such a great old hotel. last I heard (about 10 years ago) Butlins had bought it so I thought it was safe.

Great pic anyway.

Thanks.

Ah, okay, Lindy. Many thanks for locating the staircase. I went to Llandudno a lot with my grandparents when I was a lad, loved climbing the Great Orme and the ride on the boat to get there -- pleasant memories. :PDT11

I went to Llandudno every year for my summer holidays from 1957 to 1961.
I even took a photo of the Grand Hotel!
Please tell us it's still there.
It was a few years ago.
I've even got a postcard from the 1930s, with my mother's writing on the back, saying: "This is the hotel where I work."

Has the Grand been demolished or Just this staircase leading to it?

I can not find any news on the web about this but I can find lots of places
still taking bookings for the Grand Hotel Llandudno.

Those stairs can be seen to the left in the picture here

Searching around Flickr for pics of the Grand Llandudno, I found one that had a pavillion next door...the stairs seem to be between the two buildings.

It has also been recently refurbished and is looking better than it has done for some time :)

Staircase to Nowhere

To Lindy Lou

By Llandudno Pier, a staircase now going nowhere
led from exclusive Grand Hotel to a station there.
I see now the track's disused; the station burned,
the elegant iron staircase filigree yawns out spurned.

Above, Great Orme's limestone bulk dominates as ever.
I recall how I landed here excited, curious, clever,
anxious to ascend the hill in pursuit of treasures.
Time cut off such escape routes: childish pleasures.

Quite weird how they knocked down whatever it was leading to but not the staircase itself.

Sorry everyone ! I should have said in the first place that the hotel is still there :)

I'll be going to Llandudno again soon so I'll take some more photos.
We go there for days out nearly every summer. It's a place I never get tired of. I love the Great Orme, the cable cars, the pier, the beach, the smashing town centre for shopping .. hey, I'm doing a free promotion for the Welsh Tourist Board here !! :D

I LOVE Wales. :PDT11
