Hiya kids,

Sorry didn't know where else to post this question.

In the old museum, inside the entrance there used to be a massive long banner/poster of the Liverpool waterfront from centuries ago ( least i think it was centuries ) on the wall.

Question is - Anyone know where that went? I'd love to see it again.

I Used to love that and the old street on the left, the battleground scene with the periscope and sandbags....and the trains in the basement.

Anyone else miss anything that's gone now?

Hiya Wato. With living just behind the Museum in the tenements, me and my mates were never out of the Museum and Art Gallery, especially sniffing around after girls. But you got to know all the exhibits and paintings respectively off by heart.

I remember the old cobbled street where you'd press the button and hear kids doing rhymes and talking/laughing. The trains in the transport section in the basement with the dummies at the windows of the carriages, the old fire engine, John Mason removal wagon, the lion loco, the green Ford Anglia that ended up at the MoLL etc.

From the basement, you would walk along the corridor that was the aquarium, dark and lined both sides with glass cases of all kinds of sea life, crabs, colourful fish, mini sharks, catfish, starfish - I don't think the modern day one compares at all.

The far end of that corridor contained the lizards, tarantulas, stick insects and snakes. Up to the mid 1970s, upstairs was a big glass case with a section of pinewoods, beach and the railway line in the freshfield area and you could press buttons and a light would come on in the model explaining what it was. Great memories.

The section was all about the 1st world war if I remember correctly.
He had a big tommy gun with about 50 bullets coming out of one side on a long thingy..

There were also soldiers uniforms, dressed on manequins with just a mesh face, bright red tunics, then the savannah plains reconstruction with animals on them. The space room on the 3rd floor with the Planetarium, everything looked dead bright when you came out of there. That anthill in a glass case that looked like a wotsit, you know what I mean.

Yeah, I miss all that....That's what I mean by the soldiers with the periscope and sandbags and all the medals etc....It seem's to be what people remember the most....Brilliant days. I just remember walking in and seeing that big fountain with all the money in and the model ships on the ground floor....then seeing this big massive long poster of our waterfront from oldy worldy times. fascinated me that.

Yeah mate we'd try chat the girls up too...but they always wanted to go the top floor to the cafe and make us buy them drinks on tick of a snog  So if it wasn't looking promising on the way up...we'd lose em in the space rocket section :PDT11

I'd love to get a print of that waterfront though...ahh well.

Hi All

We used to be involved with the Large Objects Store, don't know whether any of you visited it was a fantastic place.

A lot of stuff is now held in the Museum Store in Juniper Street Bankhall.

Was thinking i could possibly arrange a forum visit round the store with Sharon the Curator if anyone interested.

Regards

Rob

Count me in. I saw it on a program last week with some fella that has long hair, wore a leather'ette coat, waistcoat and stacky boots. Bloody awful dress sense, but a great programme. He went to a 'secret location' (you've blown its cover now :ninja:) where, basically, all the transport exhibits from basement of the museum were stored.

Ged

Yes Rob, please keep us informed about that. I am surprised that the new museum will only increase the large objects on show to 6%. I should think they should open that large objects store up more regularly if it was practical to do so. Do the NMGL own the warehouse or rent it I wonder?

Does all the old transport (buses, etc.) survive?

Ohhhh indeedy!!!

Thats sounds brilliant, I'm sure for a lot of us to see those Exhibits would be a massive trip down memory lane.

If that's possible please let us all know. I'm sure there'll be a lot more of us who will turn out if we pass the word around the site.... Thanks mate :handclap:

It was an enlargement of a six foot long fold-out engraving by T Sulman issued in 1865 by the Illustrated London News - there's an original one on sale here if you've got £300:

http://www.garwood-voigt.com/catalogues/britain.htm

And a not very big reproduction of it here:

http://www.garwood-voigt.com/catalogues/H23582LiverpoolSulman.jpg

A reprint was included in one of the Scouse Press "Liverpool Packet" collections of maps and views that used to be sold in the museum shop in the 1980s.

Only just seen this thread.
What memories!

I actually bought an old Kings Regiment booklet from Ebay last week, from the old museum.

What have they done to it now?! I'm sorry, but I think the new museum is terrible.

I loved the massive old doll house they had in the foyer, remember that?!
The money fountain too!

The mummies were always my favourite. Anyone remember that massive man on a horse or something? It used to scare the life out of me!!!!!

The transport section in the basement always fascinated me.
I always wanted to get on that old train in the middle!

Are we still going on a visit?!!! Please!!!

I was disappointed it wasn't moved to the Museum of Liverpool Life when that originally opened.

Wonder what happened to it?

spooky stuff!

I also remember in the roman/greek part with all the statues, they had a time when they all spoke (had loop tapes running in the background) and I think the statue lit up. That scared the life out of me!

I also liked the military corridor with all the old uniforms and the display with I think it was the Queen Mother presenting the colours to troops. it was done to look like it was going off into the distance.

Mark R
02-28-2008, 08:53 PM
I remember the rooms to the left of the entrance. There was a ring of Napoleon's there with a lock of Josephine's (or Marie Louise's??) hair.

I think there was also a room depicting a court martial (in the military section) and a scene from the trenches from the 14-18 war. Wasn't there also a couple of VC's on display?

Ged

Yep, it's all coming back now. That antlered animal in bones too. As you first went up all the museums steps and into the entrance there was the sunken pond with all the coins in it by the info desk.

Anyone remember the big glass case upstairs with the model in it of the freshfield section of railway line and pine trees/beach and you could press buttons that lit it up certain sections of it and it would lite up a description of what you were looking at. I enquired about that and apparently it was donated to a Formby school to have in their entrance hall.

Mark R
02-29-2008, 11:56 AM
God yes - the pond with the coins in it! (I've got a vague memory of the railway line). Remember the penny farthing on the wall in the transport section and also the Ford Anglia (I think it was blue)? My Dad always had an Anglia. I think there was also a giant model of the Titanic just after the entrance.

Ged
02-29-2008, 12:13 PM
Yes, the Anglia though was a pale green one. It was later in the museum of Liverpool life at Mann Island.

Mark R
02-29-2008, 12:19 PM
Yes, you're right - I remember now - it was green. I think there was also a Ford Escort (XR3i)?? Also a carriage from the Overhead Railway.

Down here in the midlands,we had a really good museum for all forms of transport and scientific inventions. The Science Museum was a great place for a family day out, they had full size passenger loco's and all manner of aircraft ,cars ,motorbikes, etc, etc, in fact everything that Birmingham and the midlands was famous for. In the 80's plans were made to turn a section of the city into a "place of scientific ,historic ,artistic and literary learning".
The target was to get it started by the new millenium. And thus was Millenium Point born. A wonderful piece of architectural work. I know, I provided the security for the site.
All of the artifacts were relocated from the old museum site and reinstalled there when it was opened.
When you took your family to the old museum there was no charge,at Millennium Point it will cost the average family ,2+2, £34-00p for a visit.
Just thought I'd let you know,is that going to happen in Liverpool?

Do you remember that there was a working fire alarm inside a metal bollard?
There was a small sticker on it which sort of told a warning story about a man who once pressed the button and was fined.

I used to love the Aquarium section, do they still have it? I could spend what seemed like hours in there, it was quite a dark quiet corridor and all the tanks had pictures of the fish next to them, you could press the button and the picture would light up.

There seems much less in the new museum although it is supposedly twice the size. When I went around it, I thought it had been seriously dumbed down and was aimed at school parties. Nothing wrong with catering for schools but they shouldn't be the only ones catered for.
I loved the old basement with the carriage, bus, fire engine etc. Wasn't the Lion locomotive there too?

Gotta agree with Julie, I was so disappointed when I went round the "new" museum. Seems alot less, more arty type things (They had lots of photo's of Gorilla's when I went). I miss the transport floor and the clock and totem pole that used to go all the way up to the cafe.

I'm so hoping the mann island musuem will contain alot of the old stuff, but I'm not getting my hopes up

Ged
03-24-2008, 01:38 PM
Mann Island will be concentrated on Liverpool only so no totem poles there. I agree, the old museum was well better and being local, we knew each floor, exhibit and attendant like the back of our hand.
