Railway street as its name implies was built after the railways arrived in Garston, say mid 1850s. So its not the oldest street .It was built on a very old site though, that of the mill dam supplying water to Garston Mill. The oldest surviving houses in Garston are in Chapel Rd which was before St Mary's Rd was built, the main route into Garston village from the Aigburth area.

Yes that's right, the old row next to the Red Lion site but also Seafield Cottages a bit further along. I did post a photo of these latter cottages so time ago.

Found these old, well 3 years, photos of Chapel Rd cottages on my computer. They have of course been much modfied over the years !!

This was sited in Canterbury St. It was built in 1888 along with the two houses either side at a total then cost of £1400. Demolished late 1940s. Municipal housing was later built on the site. Photo courtesy Garston and District Historical Society

The gas works closed down making gas in 1971, when natural gas was introduced. The holders remained holding natural gas.

Thanks for the clarification Waterways, I should have mentioned the gas works has been demolished. The full history of the Garston Gas Works Works is available from the Garston & District Historical Society. Locally copies can be purchased from Garston Community House, Speke Rd, Garston

The has works buildings were quite new at the time, only built in the 1950s. They lasted about about 15 years. Horrible smelly place.

Gartson looks so much better on those pics than It does now, terrible modern buildings being blended In with the old village ones.
