Still open?
The building in the photo has been demolished.
I don't think the building in Fraser Street looks anything like the one in the photo.

Yes, the Ann Fowlers of Netherfield rd no longer exists - it moved somewhere else - must be Fraser st as you say.

The Ann Fowler Home was originally a Welsh Chapel serving the large Welsh population in Everton.

I remember seeing the building years ago. It looked big, old and the bricks were black. I think by then it was closed and awaiting demolision. I always thought it was a school.

Been in both places, Ann Fowlers, which was subsequently replaced with the Fraser Street Womens Hoster. Not as a resident, thank God, but as a housing officer trying to place the Women, which was, believe me, difficult as a lot of Landlords did not want to take "one of Ann Fowlers". Lots of sad stories and casualties but whilst I did not relish visiting, particularly Fowlers, you have to remember that it was established at a time when, sadly, womenwho were homeless literally on the street. "Fallen", as in "Fallen Women" could and did mean prostitution but for most women it could mean having a child, being abandoned, or being illegitimate or simply being poor. Many Women felt great shame being in there. As the Daughter of a Woman placed in an orphanage when her own Mother died, and a Father born illegitmate in Brownlow Hill Workhouse I always tried to place myself in the position of these Women I was interviewing. After all, there but for the grace of God.......................This brings back memories

I was always getting things nicked off me when I was a nipper,at ten years of age in Juniors I drew a baby Elephant and its Mamma and it was the best drawing I ever did at that age...it was so good someone nicked it off the wall.
Was sent to the headmasters study for being a nuiscence one day...knocked on his door and entered when he called me in.
Standing there in front of his desk and him looking out the window I started looking around and on the left wall was me drawing in a frame.
Robbing bleeder, I murmered to meself.

Good site that Ged :handclap: don't think I've come across it before. Very interesting to read about Major Lester having another 3 graves other than his own, for poor children. He must have been a great and compassionate man.
Aye Lindy. Have to seen the drawing of Everton in 1818 from Great Mersey Street, Kirkdale when it was mansion house up on t'hill.
