Ahlaam - The Dream - was filmed in Baghdad and the director, Mohamed Al-Daradji, will attend the screening. The film’s broadcast is part of the 2007 Arabic Arts Festival being held in Liverpool.
The Dream traces the paths of three characters whose lives are marked by the brutality of the Baa'thist regime, in what becomes an increasingly nightmarish odyssey. It’s a voyeuristic tale, travelling from past to present.
Al-Daradji studied theatre directing in Baghdad but fled to Holland in 1995, where he specialised as a cameraman. He subsequently moved to the UK and completed his MA in cinematography at Leeds University. He has made several short films and some commercials. ‘Ahlaam’ is his first feature film.
Alice Morrison, chief executive of Northwest Vision + Media, which has helped organise the screening, said “It’s a tremendously important film, bringing us a previously unseen insight into post Saddam Iraq.”
The Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival (http://www.arabicartsfestival.co.uk/), which runs from 1 July to 15 July, will offer a number of events from artists from Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Yemen, Palestine, France, America and Britain.
