I've just spent most of Yesterday & today sorting out my Ebay account after it was hijacked
I went on Ebay yesterday & had noticed I had 4 unpaid items & 3 sellers had started disputes against me for unpaid items, I had "bought" 4 laptops
I hadn't noticed that my account had been hijacked as I never received any emails from ebay because my Email Addy had been changed
they changed who the account was registered to & sellers were told to send their laptops to Mr Oluwafemi Akanbi in Nigeria
I spent yesterday emailing the sellers & Ebay telling them I hadn't bought the laptops to tell them my account had been hijacked
I've now changed my password & changed back my email addy, hopefully its all sorted now
It just shows how easy it is for your account to be hijacked :disgust:
I never click on any emails from ebay & always report any suspicious looking ones so I don't know how they got hold of my account

Hi Mandy
I am glad that you have extricated yourself from this situation without being badly financially harmed. :PDT11
Yes it does go to show how easy it is for this type of situation to occur. We should all be wary and on the look out because of the scam artists who are after what they see as easy pickings from innocent parties. :disgust: Thanks for sharing your experience with us. All's well that ends well.

I often get emails supposidly from an ebay buyer who says that he
has sent me payment for a laptop and not received the item. If I click
on the item number, surprise, surprise it dosn't exist, nor does the buyers
email address. I just delete/report scams like this... As for payment, my
Paypal account never shows any incoming payment for said item

You can all have a tip from working in the computer industry for years.
If you get a suspicious looking E-mail, NEVER click on the link - this normally puts cookies on your PC so they can be tracked when you are using the correct link.
Instead, hover your mouse pointer over the link and in the bottom bar in the window, it'll come up with the true address - that way you know it's total rubbish.

thanks guys for your replies
I never click on any emails from Ebay or Paypal as I always go to Ebay & check if there is a message in my inbox,if there is no message I always forward the email to the spoof messages on ebay
I can't see what the hijackers had to gain unless they expected the sellers to send the laptops before payment?
or am I just being simple...don't answer that!

There was an eBay security breach a while back, where apparently it was possible for your account to be accessed by someone. Don't know how widespread it was.
I read an interesting article about bank websites. It was all about who is to blame if you use online banking and your bank account is accessed by an imposter over the web. The bank websites are secure as you like - but is your computer? That was the bank's first line of defence.
Too often, computers are loaded with spyware and malware - yes, Windows XP makes everything look alright, but a keylogger can make light work of recording passwords, etc. Unlikely, but it pays to be security-conscious. Remember, you're linking a box, which could have a lot of personal data, to millions of other people all round the world, many of whom are not very nice characters. Get a good virus guard, and download LavaSoft's AdAware (the free one) for a start.

I have had dodgy emails form ebay saying they need me to change my account details. I deleted them, didn't realise you shouldn't open them. On another subject of cons/fraud. I myself have just been a victim of Credit Card fraud, the person got a card for £4000 in my name and transfered it to a bank account. Barclaycard (the Credit Card account), have been useless, keep billing me and sent a bailliffs letter. My solicitor is now in the process of trying to sort it, hope its sorted soon, been going on snce February. I shred EVERYTHING, so how did it happen? It's obviously easy. You can get information from the Electoral Roll on line, i think it's disgusting! :disgust:

Go to 192.com and you can find anything about everyone. I used it once when I had to track down some one :PDT11

If they're not in the telephone directory and not on the electoral roll, then you won't find out anything about them.
I've used e-bay a lot and had no bother.
I get e-mails from them, but you can tell the legitimate ones. Good advice from Cadfael about hovering over the link. E-bay never ask you to submit anything by e-mail, they always ask you to visit the site and log in.
My advice is to buy download Norton antivirus and internet security. It costs about £30 to £40 and updates automatically. You can get it from PC World (they often have it on offer) or download from http://www.symantec-unitedkingdom.co.uk/v2.0-img/operations/symantus/site/sm/ms/nsc/uk/nav.html
I upgraded from Norton 2003 and downloaded Norton 2007.
I've always used Norton and NEVER had any problems. If you do the system scan, it gets rid of anything dodgy.
Good luck!!

I would also recommend Spybot and AVG these have saved my pc a few times
from trojans and other nasties....:PDT11
I still speak to people now who have no anti-virus or internet security.
Might as well just lash your PC out of the window!!

but it is so easy to make a site address look real. If you hover over the
address as has been said it will display the info, if t comes up something
like http:// 211.101.10.20/ebay.htm or whatever then it is almost
certainly fake, my advice is never answer any emails from ebay or paypal
or banks asthey will usualy write 2U if important

You can also find out where the email came from by looking at the headers which your email program should allow you to do. Quite often the email will be from the Netherlands or Russia or somewhere, not from where they are pretending to communicate from. The other aspect is that quite often these are mass mailings and they won't have your email address right, but somehow it managed to come through to you, so find out to whom the thing is addressed. Above all be wary, these crooks are wily! :disgust:

One thing to remember about security.
You will NEVER have to pay to keep your PC secure.
There are lots of very good FREE apps out there. Use these apps and a little common sense - especially the tip above about emails - and you should be fine.
When the box comes up from your firewall app saying *****.*** wants to access the net then read it fully. If you are not sure then do not allow it access.
Don't worry if something stops working, it will always ask again as long as you haven't ticked the ALWAYS/NEVER check box.
Good luck and keep safe.
AVG (http://www.free.grisoft.com)
Zonealarm (http://www.zonealarm.com)
and probably the best free antispyware app on the net
a-squared (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/)

I have a copy of this token though not in as nice a condition as the one that sold on ebay. The final selling price of £230.00 even given the great condition though sounds a bit outrageous!!!! Something tells me there may have been a bidding war over it. :002:
