Thinking of choosing the SLR.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
It comes with an EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 II lense, how much optical zoom would that be If It was on a compact?
Hiya mate,
I bought one of these a few months back, Was my first digi SLR.
The camera itself was brilliant, quality etc.
My problem came when I changed a lens. My missus has a film canon and a few lenses that would fit the new 400D. (Here's the bit where everyone goes, oh you have to do this and that to change a lens) I WAS reeeeally careful.
However I was outdoors and dust got into the lens ( and this was my first outdoor session 2 days after my purchase ) I followed the instructions on cleaning, but to no avail. stubborn buggers wouldn't move. I went to Jessops in town for advice and came away with enough stuff to clean a tank.
Compressed air the lot they sold me...... did it work? nah.
I phoned canon who explained about taking a pure white image of the dust and then calculating the points to wipe them in photoshop or some editor.
This would then have to be done on every photograph I take ever.

Now remembering I'm a novice. I was a bit overwhelmed and said to the Canon fella, is there any other way? He said we'll do it for £80 at which point I got up off the floor and explained I was an Orphan and my dog had been run over and christmas was only 10 months away etc. He said well you could always buy 4 digital SLR's and never change a lens again.
I sent it back...simple. As a Novice you dont get told these things...even though I'd done a bit of research on the models from the 350 to the 400D and the Sony and Nikon equivalents. It was only when I got to the complaints forums that I went AHHHHH S***.
Anyhoo. If your keen on them...research the whinge forums I would say. As you know Film camera's wouldn't suffer such fate as the dust is moved on by the roll of the wheel, so no dust on the next frame even though they still need a good cleaning of course regularly. At least that's what I'm told. :disgust:
10.1 Mp was nice though and the pictures were great. saying that, after much more research and the decision I wasn't prepared to do all that dust removal myself or pay that much to be cleaned, I decided on the Fujifilm S9600 which is a fixed lens but zooms from 28-300 - 9 mp and I Effin Love it.
Needs more playing about with that the canon to get a top pic but it does get them. Flash is poo though and buying an external is apparently the way to go...that said its £170 cheaper than the canon so the external flash isn't an issue, cept my wife's eyeing it up for a share....yeah right only if she shares her mates. :unibrow:
