UNSEEN AND UNPUBLISHED - PARADISE GARDENS - 1ST FEB 1966

[Ged]

Possibly the most inappropriately named housing i've ever come across given the living conditions. Paradise Gardens off Pinnington's Cottages which themselves were off Wavertree High Street were photographed here to highlight the penetrative and rising damp which was prevalent throughout the scullery.

Any idea when they were taken,Ged? I remember a place near Fonthill rd,in Kirkdale,that looked similar inside,and a house in Rumney rd,where I lived,wasn't much better,but that was the early 60's

Funnily enough, I got Rumney Road out on the same day as these, what No. house?

I also asked for what was known as the 'Cochrane Street slum clearance programme' folder - they said are you sure.

Now I know why. 221 pics of everything that stood on both sides of Heyworth Street and all the streets off it such as Jasmine, Amos, Desmond etc. I also got Store st, Melrose Road and others in that area.

I already had what previously stood on the now derelict Easby Estate - the 60s houses on Harcourt street and Lambeth Walk etc.

Our firegrate in Albion St was similair to that one....vut then again it was sooooooo long ago it could be the same type?

Yes, great to look back on. I have others of this area including a street called Pinningtons Cottages, i'll get around to uploading them eventually. The site will go past 10,000 pics. I might look at starting another with pages either alphabetically or by postcode.

Talking about your site,a guy I knew who was on 2Mb vroadband said it took absolutley ages to load some of the links...to which he gave up looking.

Cheers George. I've had hundreds if not thousands of responses including people who return to it time and time again and not a peep about it being slow though. I just logged onto it and it opened up sharpish, same at home. Is it a Spectrum Sinclair computer he's got?

1966 then!?:unibrow: I'm not sure exactly which no' house it was,but ours was no'28,which was central,directly opposite the Kirkdale homes,and the house in question,was towards Westminster rd! The area is unrecognisable,bar for the "Medlock" pub,as both Medlock st.,and Leven st. have both gone!
Thing is,there are houses of a similar age in the area,which are still in fine condition,down towards the "Rec",(park) which was the site of Kirkdale jail!

Ged,I'm on 10Mb broadband and a 256Mb graphics card and the slowest link is the very first one ie Pre War Scenes Page one...this takes about 2 minutes? to load all the photies.

Don't forget the pictures are larger than first appear so use the scroll bar.

In the Jusoda pic, there is a very primitive looking clock.

In the range picture, there is a built in cupboard. We had one of those in the living room (which everyone back then called the kitchen) of our tennies.
