View Full Version : Driving License
marie 06-17-2007, 09:17 PM I am reading the web about driving licenses in UK but I cannot understand anything...
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/TheoryTest/DG_4022531
In Spain u have to go to an Academy to learn. U have to realize a theoretical examination. If u commit less than 4 failures between 40 questions, u can realize another practical examination. But the examinations are in the Traffic Station.
How is it in England? THANX!!

If you have a Spanish licence, then you can automatically apply for an English one.
If you havent, then you must pass a driving test, as well as written exam. However it isnt compulsory to go to a school if you can find a friend to teach you. I received lessons from my mother, but its probably best to fins a driving schoo. Here is link to some in your area. Here's a link to some from the yellow pages website, I honestly dont know the cost, but I think £20 per hour will be the the minimum

You may be best to pass the exams in Spain as thats your language and it will be easier than having lessons/exams in English. Then apply for a UK licence.

Its not compulsory to attend an academy/school first, but obviously a good idea. You can apply for the test with 0 lessons if you want.
I know if I took my test now I'd fail. I'd be driving with one hand on the wheel and the other on the stereo, at 35 miles an hour, and many other mistakes.

shytalk 06-18-2007, 03:47 AM How simple things were in the olden days. I passed my test in 1957, It was just after the Suez crisis( WTF is this old fart on about? I can here yez thinking.)
I seem to remember it lasted about 6 months, fuel was rationed and the government stopped driving tests. They decided that anyone who already had a provisional licence could drive without supervision. I got plenty of practice in my old Y model Ford in those 6 months. I worked for Blakes the main Ford dealer and I borrowed one of the demo cars for my test, I think this helped a lot.
At that time there was only one place the gave tests, that was the Liver Bldgs.
The examiner took you along Sefton St. up Parly and around by the David Lewis.
It was on one of the steep streets from Gt.George St. up to the cathedral that he did the hill start. Then a drive around Rodney St. and back through town, Church St. was open to traffic then. He did an emergency stop on the way. On returning to the side of the Liver he asked you to read a number plate, that was the eye test, then he did questions on the highway code, it is probably harder to answer them like that than it is on paper.
In those days you had to renew your licence yearly, then it went to 3 yearly, I have all my old licences except my provisional. someone told me they took that when you got your full licence.
My licence expires in 2008, I don't think I will be renewing it, I haven't driven over there in years anyway, my sister drives me around when I visit.
I'm waiting for my provisional.
I'm going to ram people off the road like I've always dreamed about.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Nah, just kidding, I'll pass a test easy though considering the people they allow to drive these days.
Cadfael 06-18-2007, 10:57 AM Marie,
if you're after a good driving instructor, go to www.kathyhigginsdipdi.co.uk She's only in Garston and one of the most qualified bods in the industry!
marie 06-18-2007, 04:52 PM Thanx Shytalk, Max and Cadfael!! If I passed the two exams in one time, 10 years ago, I hope passed the exam here too. I do not know if are a lot of diferences in the theory exam, in my practical exam I know where is the difference, English driving in other direction... I will write an email to my embassy and then to Kathy Higgins. THANX AGAIN!!
Sloyne 06-18-2007, 08:32 PM I hold two drivers licences and some people think I shouldn't have any.:)
shytalk 06-18-2007, 08:43 PM I'm licenced to drive on either side of the Street too. The only place wouldn't like to drive is Trinidad 'cos they drive down the middle of the road.:002:

PS: My wife is the most dextrous driver I know, each year she drives 2600 miles between Toronto and Tampa,,,,,,,,, from the passenger seat.
Sshhhhhhhh, don't tell her I said that.:)
Sloyne 06-18-2007, 09:01 PM I have just ordered my new vanity plates. Couldn't get any variation of SCOUSE or EVERTON but, I did manage to get the following; EVERTQN. I ordered TQFFEES for my other vehicle. They should arrive in six to eight weeks.
