View Full Version : Are you a born Scouser?
Sloyne 06-14-2007, 07:46 PM I have just returned from a funeral and observed a grave marker, close to the grave I was attending, with the following inscription; 'Leftenant Owen McShane the Royal Regiment of Canada, Born Liverpool, England, the date then; "English born but a true son of Canada". Which brings me to the question; How many of you were not born in Liverpool and/or how many "Scousers" do you know who were not born in Liverpool?
I have a second cousin (something removed) who was born in HMP Strangeways, Manchester but, a truer Scouser you've never met.
Steven 06-14-2007, 07:56 PM Cockneys claim that to be a true Cockney you have to be born within the sound of Bow Bells.
A Scouser is somebody who was born in Liverpool.
GingerTheCat 06-14-2007, 07:59 PM I've lived here for 30 years but am definitely not a Scouser. I don't think you need to be born here to be a Scouser but need to have lived here at least from a very early age.
Its the early years that matter.
Mike
PhilipG 06-14-2007, 08:07 PM I've lived in Liverpool for almost 2/3 of my life (almost 40 years) and I'm definitely an honourary Scouser.
Sod the early years (I've no allegiance to them) and I didn't live in those places by choice.
I love Liverpool and chose to live here.
Sloyne.
How did somebody manage to be born in Strangeways?
Isn't it a male prison?
chippie 06-14-2007, 08:15 PM Don,t ask Phil.... it might be embarrassing:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Isn't it a male prison? I wouldn't know about the gender of the present clientel, I do know that my auntie Nora was imprisoned in Strangeways Prison, Manchester at the outbreak of hostilities with Germany and my cousin was born in September 1940 in that prison. After he was wiened he was given to my great aunt, his grandmother, to raise. My aunt was a ranking member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and was incarcerated until the Nazis attacked the Soviet Union. Upon her release she voluntered and joined the Army Medical Corp and was sent to Singapore as a nurse. She never survived the war. His father, also a member of the CPofGB was torpedoed in the Med while serving as a fireman on a ship supplying the island of Malta.

Thanks Sloyne.
Florence Maybrick went to Walton at first, and Oscar Wilde went to Holloway, so it would seem that a lot (if not all) prisons were originally for both sexes.
and someone born in Garston is a mudman :PDT11
Born, bred and still breeding :PDT10
Sloyne 06-14-2007, 08:56 PM and someone born in Garston is a mudman I remember many years ago playing around the wrecks and watching a dog run out onto the mud flats. We decided that we would also venture out, seeing as the dog had only sank an inch or so into the mud. Big mistake, we sank in up to our waist's and had to be rescued. I lost one of my pumps and sock but I was fortunate, one of my pals lost both his shoes and socks, pants and underpants.
Sloyne 06-14-2007, 09:32 PM Oscar Wilde went to Holloway Very logical, wouldn't you think?;)

That is truly bizarre.
WHY may I ask.
Born in Mill Road Maternity Hospital but my family were living off Scottie at the time. I moved house 6 times in 36 years but never out of Liverpool 3.
wallasey 06-18-2007, 10:31 AM Even though I take great pride in what I call my "home" city; I was actually born in Tynedale way up in Northumberland. Went to school there untill fairly recently (Jun06) where upon I finally broke free and came down here to go to college in Birkenhead.
My dads side of the family all come from Liverpool/Wallasey so it could be argued that I am the one anomilie (apart from my sister who was born in Japan!). although I grew up in Northumberland; it has never felt like home. Every school holliday I would come down here for a week or so longing for the day when I wouldnt have to fear going north. Thankfully that day came last year!
Dont go thinking I have a Northumbrian accent! Its sort of a Merseyside/Lancastrian blend which is all fun and sometimes baffles people when I admit to not being a local! :unibrow:
robbo176 06-18-2007, 10:56 AM I was born in Mill Road too, but many years after you Ged :PDT10

shytalk 06-18-2007, 12:22 PM I was born in Tuebrook, I used to have 'SCOUSE' on my personalized licence plate when I lived in Florida, I really don't mind the word Scouse and can see nothing wrong with it. :snf (41):

lindylou 06-18-2007, 02:36 PM I don't think it matters if you live away form Liverpool. it is what is in your heart that counts.
Even if I moved far away - and there are times when I wish I could !! :) I would still regard Liverpool as 'home' and I will always be a Liverpool lass at heart. :) :)

That is a beautiful thing to say. There is no place like Liverpool to come home to. :handclap::handclap::handclap::handclap::handclap:
Knottedash 06-18-2007, 06:35 PM I was born in park rd or mill lane maternity hosp not sure which and grew up in Knotty Ash. At some point before I was born, Knotty Ash was still part of Lancashire. I have always considered myself a scouser as I was born in liverpool and have what I believe is the more traditional scouse accent ie. beatle-esque. Correct me if Im wrong about the traditional accent not sure what it was - only got my welsh born grandads accent to go by.

Aye, I agree with Lindy that even though I no longer live in Liverpool, I still regard it as "home." Also in agreement with Steven's applause for Lindy's statement. Nicely said, Lindylou. :PDT11
