Back in the sixties when I lived in Shand Street the whole street used to go to blackpool on a large coach. Does anybody know who actually organised these events, and who footed the bill.

Eddie = I think you will find that they were organised by a few of the families in the street and paid for by donations from the residents of said street.

We had the same thing back in the late 40s and 50s. I can remember my uncle Ronnie, sitting at the kitchen table counting out how much was in the kitty, and working out the date to book the chara.
That was when we had = COMMUNITY SPIRIT = Its all gone now, sad but true.

For those who are interested, the Garston and District Historical society have a charabang trip to.... wait for it....... STOCKPORT on July 14th, price £13. Well it is on the River Mersey after all.

Thanks for that, I sort of thought so but I can not remember ever seeing the organisation of these trips being carried out.

When I was a kid and we went to Blackpool, my mam used to make me go on a donkey. I was upset because I wanted to travel there on the charra with my mates :eek:

We never went to Blackpool, but went to Southport paid for by the local Catholic churches. Here is a picture of us from 1969 taken from the Catholic Pictorial. Many families in the area could not afford holidays, so these trips were a welcome boost during the school summer holidays.
