View Full Version : Old photos
Liverpolitan 06-03-2007, 06:23 PM I recently found a few old family photos. There are a few of me, one of them is this one. I reckon I was probably less than two, but might have been older? Funny thing is that, perhaps because being photographed was such a rarity, I can actually remember this incident and its one of my earliest memories. We lived in Linkside (Woolton) and I was helping clean the panes in the back door. I remember thinking it would be more efficient if I stood in the bucket, and then not understanding why I was being laughed at because of this. Obviously it was funny enough for someone to get a camera out.

Does anyone know how to improve the quality of the photo? It's faded so it looks almost like a negative. Any suggestions appreciated. I've got a basic version of photoshop but that doesn't seem to do much to it.
I've found loads of old negatives as well - does anyone know a cheap way of getting those onto my computer? Do I need to get them developed at a photo place like Boots?

Another that is a bit ****ed up, assume it's one of my Dad's as they are the only ones in the box. But I keep seeing this view in old photos, and I wonder if it was a common view for amatuer photographers in the 1950s, a bit the way nowadays people take pictures of the Pier Head or whatever?

Wow! How did you do that? That is my first view of myself as a toddler I've seen! What a fat face I had! I wonder what the sink thing is on the left - maybe that is what sinks used to look like? I reckon it was taken around 1960 or 1961.
Thanks for converting the image for me.

It's got October 1971 written on the back.

I did a poor conversion - took a photo of it on my mobile in 'negative' mode so it turned out 'normal' :PDT11

I think I can remember my Dad taking this, as I was really impressed with that fountain thing....I think this photo is around 1970. Interesting that the tiles around the casing are dark in those days, as if memory serves me correctly they are white now.
Liverpolitan 06-03-2007, 07:17 PM http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/7457/derbypoolje3.jpg
The old Derby Pool, Harrison Drive, New Brighton. It was an open air pool, I think about half a mile or so up the road from the main New Brighton pool. We didn't like it as much because it always seemed to be colder. I think this photo was probably taken in 1970s, but I can't remember when that pool closed.

Liverpolitan.
They're great photos of Liverpool.
Would you like to put them in "Old Liverpool"?
Looks just like your oldest, Kev. :PDT11
He does a bit Phil, cheers :PDT11
Liverpolitan 06-03-2007, 08:59 PM Thanks Drone.
Philip - yes I should put the betters ones up in "Old Liverpool". I like the James Street one, it was obviously taken before they enclosed the bridge over the tracks. The frustrating thing is that I am sure there are loads more somewhere, as my Dad loved taking pictures and even made his own amatuer "dark room" thing because it was costing too much to get them developed. He used to like taking pictures around Birkenhead Docks so I am sure I must have some from there. I am just not sure where they are. I'll try to get some more scanned before too long.
shytalk 06-03-2007, 09:11 PM I was looking at what you called a sink, it looks to me like an old fashioned baby high chair with a baby bath sitting on top of it.:PDT11

chippie 06-03-2007, 10:47 PM Hello Liverpolitan, smashin, pics. That one of the fountain in Drury Lane shows the office block that I used to work in. In fact I did my last days work in that block in 1999 before I "retired". It,s called Mersey House.:)

What a fantastic contrast with what is there now! Who would have believed that it would have vanished so quickly? Great picture.

They're particularly special because the 1960s & 1970s photos seem to be the rarest.
Probably, like your father's, they're still waiting to get a wider showing.
Liverpolitan 06-04-2007, 08:27 PM Thanks for the comments everyone - I will start looking through the negatives and see what else there is, and hopefully put some more pics up once I get them developed.
Nice one Liverpolitan, any more of the commie blocks? I'm always interested to see old pictures of Liverpool with loads and loads of tower blocks.
I posted your picture here:

Just asks me to log in. But your page has been posted on the skyscrapercity thread and is amazing!
Quote from Butterfield - Birmingham:
"That Liverpool link really is shockingly fantastic! I nearly choked looking at it."
Did you get a lot of your pictures from books?
And if you like tower blocks - have you seen the Red road ones in Glasgow? No less than 32 floors!
chippie 06-08-2007, 09:35 AM I remember the red road flats from way back in the late 60s or early 70s. My relatives lived up in Townhead. The flats could be seen for miles. They were the tallest in Europe once, don,t know about in todays climate.
Sorry about that link I posted up Twiz, you're right, nearly choked myself for different reasons lol.
Glad somebody has put the proper link up though and they like it.
A lot of the pictures are by individuals such as Harry Ainscough, Joe Devine and Mike Murphy who had the great presence of mind to capture the scenes before they were demolished and rather than them fade away in a drawer or box, they kindly let me show them.
My books concentrate on the 30s style corporation tenements though.
Thanks for your interest.
Ged.

just catching up on threads as I'm a newbie, I used to work in Mersey House too! I loved the buckets as a kid and was thrilled when I found out I could see them from my office window.
I spent 18 months in the post room before getting a transfer to Deysbrook.
I've just added the first 10 pics to a new page on my website that weren't really catered for before.

I don't usually look at that site.
All the chap said was they were glass slides passed down through the family.
He didn't make any claims that they were taken by any of his family.
Poor chap only wanted to share them, but a certain person is going on and on and on and on and............................................... ....
