An American robin in full song. Bigger than the European robin, the North American robin is related to the blackbird and thrush.
shytalk 06-03-2007, 03:56 PM The first picture is a woodpecker on my bird feeder.
Second is a Liver Bird in flight, the only one ever photographed, honest. Trust me, I'm a Scouser. :)

Sorry, I wish I could claim that I took it, but it was taken a while ago by one of the family on a canal in Maghul.
chippie 06-14-2007, 08:09 PM I thought not Steven, the Dingle Kingfisher has a very distinctive red tail feather sticking out at right angles. And its ears are much bigger too.

chippie 06-23-2007, 11:56 AM Baztop, the heron is one of my favourite birds. I have one I see looking for food on the river by me, sometimes. Smashing photos mate, I,ll stash them in my favs.:)
Iain, another cracker bird, great photos mate specially the wings outspread one. brill.:)
Took these while I was away too in a little place called Lochinver, a fairly busy fishing port. In the trees at the back of the port were about 30 Heron nests. We could see this one quite easily from the path below without disturbing them - a few young ones poked their heads out and stretched their wings from time to time but they hadn't yet started flying. A couple of adults were circling around from time to time and landing on the tops of the trees - how such a big bird can land on a tiny branch without it even swaying I don't know. The tourist info centre had a camera near one of the nests too so you could go in and see them close up.

iain looks like a great place id love to go there and get some snaps.
chippie 06-23-2007, 11:22 PM Nice ones Iain, who,s the ugly one Steven?lol:)
Thanks Steven, Barry & Chippie. It's a fantastic region for seeing wildlife. Apart from the sheep you see everywhere anyway, I've seen deer at close range, grouse, herons, cormorants, all sorts of birds I don't know the names of, seals, otters, even minke whales. A shame they often appear and vanish again too quick to get my camera out.
Maybe one of you ornithologists could identify this one for me... I think it's a grouse but I dunno.
Looks like he's contemplating life too :unibrow:

ChrisGeorge 06-25-2007, 06:45 PM Hi Iain
I am no expert but Google appears to show that, going by the red on its head, it is probably a Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) aka Willow Grouse or Willow Ptarmigan. See
http://www.arthurgrosset.com/europebirds/redgrouse.html
All the best

Steven, one of my favorite pieces of music is "The White Peacock" by American classical composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes, and your nice photo of a white peacock reminded me of it. It's an impressionistic piece inspired by a poem by Fiona Macleod, which was actually the pen name of a late Victorian male writer, William Sharp (http://www.victorianweb.org/authors/sharp/sospiri.html). I know, kinky! But Tomlinson's work is a lovely piece of music. The poem that inspired it reads in part:
Here, as the breath, as the soul of this beauty
White as a cloud through the heats of the noontide
Moves the White Peacock.
