And todays old picture is A225 a 1957 AEC Regent 5, MCW bodied bus loading outside Owen Owens on the 4B to Woolton. taken around 1959 (copyright MPTE)

Note the old concrete bus pole, advert for J Davy Speke. and the offside rear lower corner panels in Rubber as an experiment with collision damage.

We will again be having a Vehicle running day on 9th September when we will be running around 10 of our old buses between Woolton/Penny lane/Mann island on routes 4/5/73/77. Don't worry I'll remind you all again nearer the date!

Remember City models were Etam was ? and what was the cinema called in Clayton Sq?

Regards

Rob

Remember City models very well. The News theatre which became the Jacey was the holy shrine blessed sacrament though by the time I shopped around there - only young you see.

Yeah, I remember City Models & Toys very well too. I was always gazing in the window as a kid.

Then it moved to Stanley Street and it just wasn't the same.

Was it Clayton Square where the carpet shop went up in flames ?
All the water damaged carpets were put in the road for anyone to take.

Me mam would not go and get one .

You had to be careful if you went to the News Theatre in case the bloke in the dirty Mac came and sat next to you :-((.
I preferred the Tatler on Lime St. Used to sag school and spend all day in there as you could watch the show over and over again until you got fed up.
At least you were out of the weather.

Hi everyone, one of my few posts:) I was an usherette at the Liverpool News Theatre in Clayton Square for about 8 months. The Manager was a Mr Potter (or Potts), it was a long time ago, 1951 to be exact. They only showed News reels, cartoons and travelogues in those days, it was my first job after leaving school.

Wasn't the Tatler on Church Street?

Yes, if Customhouse was on Limey then it'd been the futurist, ABC or palais de lux.

It was the News room in Clayton Square which became the Jacey. The Tatler was in Church Street facing C&A.

When the Tatler in Church Street closed, in 1972, the other cinema in London Road (not the Odeon) was then called the Tatler, before becoming the Eros in 1979.
By that time Classic owned the Tatler name and use it for its X certificate cinemas.

We would go there and we called it the Tatler, which makes me think it was called the Tatler at one time - either when I went as a little kid or before and the name stuck. I never ever went in the one in Church Street. Unless Tatler was used as a generic name for news/cartoon theaters in Liverpool - as Hoover is used for vacuum cleaners.

PS Didn't it become some kind of chapel or something?

I think Tatler was a countrywide chain I have just done a Google and many people refer to the Clayton Squ theatre as the Tatler as well. Which makes me think a news/cartoon theatre was always called a Tatler.

Is it just so darn hard to admit that, once in a millenium, you are fallible?

Me? I've made so many mistakes in life and been wrong so many times, one more just doesn't bother me!

We called it the Tatler and went to watch the cartoons in the afternoon. It seems many others called it the Tatler too. I may not be wrong.

I've just spent so long replying that I was timed out and had to log on again only to find that my reply hasn't shown.
In a nutshell the Tatler in Church Street was the only Tatler (News Theatre) in Liverpool.
I'll give a more detailed reply tonight after I've made it a separate text file.

Same thing happened to me in my rant about wanting a Tescos in Anfield.
I got logged-out and my post didn't go on, so I had to type it all over again. :034:

edit ... it just happened again in another thread ... you gotta' type quick or get logged-out !
I left the computer for a moment and nearly lost another post. I was on the ball this time and was quick enough to save it by copy & paste :)

Use the back button. This should bring the previous pages back, even the pages you wrote on. Firefox certainly is good for that.

Before hitting the key, save the ext to the clipboard (memory).

1. Put the cursor in the text
2. Type: Ctrl A - this highlights the text.
3. Type: Ctrl <insert> - this puts the text inside the clipboard.

You can then paste the text anywhere as it is in memory.

While trying to rescue the situation, I noticed that the Yo page went blank and I had to completely exit and come back in ! Twice I've had to do that.

WW needn't worry about being wrong just the once as he was also wrong on another site by saying the session drummer the Beatles used on Love me do was Tommy White when it was Andy White ;)

Being wrong just the once is hard to admit as you like to keep your record intact, twice is a little easier dontchathink, I found it so :)

It was still referred to as the Tatler. The Tatler in Church St was the country's first news theatre, which makes me think all News theaters were referred to as "Tatler". Philip may clarify.

The Tatler was at 25 Church Street, its entrance was in part of the building now occupied by Clarks Shoes. This same building once housed the very first Woolworths before they built their much larger store across the road on the site of St Peter's Church.

The cinema in Clayton Square opened in 1912 as The Liverpool Picture House and changed its name to the Prince of Wales before becoming The Liverpool News Theatre in 1946, finally finishing up as The Jacey from 1964 to 1972. I'm not sure but suspect the "Jacey" name was derived from J & C Moores Ltd, the company owned by the famous John & Cecil of Littlewoods fame, who by that time owned most of the properties in Clayton Square.

What I cant get my head round is the fact, that I used to wait for the bus in Clayton Square when I was a kid, but now, how come there seems to be 2 levels? I mean all those steps to go up and down, I dont remember Clayton Square being on such an incline.?????
