View Full Version : Eldon Grove...What A Waste

Went past the Eldon Grove flats on saturday with 3 other Yo members. As the gate was open we went inside for a few pics.
It is so sad to see such a wonderful building in this sorry state. A large section of the roof is fire damaged. Most windows are broken. Such a shame. Now it seems not to be locked up the damage may get worse.

Belter photos Spike. It's such a shame that these will probably end up becoming so dilapidated as to do anything with them.

As much as I also hate period properties being demolished we have to be realist here and say that it would cost too much to bring it back to its former glory,if the building was profitable if done up then fine but if there's no profit to be made on it then knock it down...sorry but its like having a car thats 90 rusted its pointless spending good dosh on it.

Great pictures Spike. I thought Eldon Grove was being refurbished. Looking at those pictures it looks like this was started at sometime, and then left. The building will be left to rot now, given the current economic crisis.

I can't understand why it was left to get in such a state. It should have been refurbished long ago. It would be a lovely building done up to it's former glory.

No, not necessarily, BH! We're all in the Big Society now! We don't have to wait for 'them' to do stuff for us any more! We're all going to rush over there and offer our services as volunteers, aren't we?... Aren't we? Well, you see, central government might just be so impressed with our efforts that they'll cough up lots of lovely money, won't they? Why doesn't anyone believe this???

great pics i may have a look at this sometime this week
As the last surviving (just about) of their type - and there were quite a few in Vauxhall, Everton and Dingle. The council should try and save these. A developer did get the top block sorted but I think he was relying on the sale of his showflat to continue the project but I suspect that living on a building site might have been one reason for putting of prospective buyers.
The flats were sadly set alight on 27th September last year and my nephew took these photos.

From page 104 where Sharples also mentions...?

A few Grade II structures are recorded under Bevington Street:
West Block and attached railings.
Central Block and attached railings
Eastern Block and attached railings
Bevington Street / Limekiln Lane Railings and piers to Bevington St. Recreation Ground.
Limekiln Lane (w side), street lamp between Eldon Grove and Bevington St.
Titchfield Street, street lamp between Eldon Grove and Bevington Street
The lamps were listed before the buildings. (1975 Vs 1993).
Part of the listing for the West Block states "forms a group with the railings to the recreation ground and lamp standards."
Edit: Just noticed Spikes pictures above...that looks like a rare drinking fountain/lamp combination. The Listing does mention this:
"Cast iron. Large and high square plinth with Greek key ornament, and formerly with drinking fountain on 2 sides. Lamp stands above this high plinth, with splayed base ornamented with foliage pattern and with corner feet: fluted high columns with two ornamented arms holding lamp. Now in front of tarmac play area, with similar lamp at opposite side (see Titchfield Street)"

Anyone off here?
TWO men were rescued by firefighters after a block of flats went up in flames.
The pair, both aged 50, were inside the derelict block on Eldon Grove, Vauxhall, when the fire broke out at around 3.45pm today (Saturday).
Firefighters pulled the pair to safety before they were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Both men were taken to the Royal Hospital to be checked over by doctors

The only things dodgy Ste going on in Eldon Grove are the gypsies arriving daily
(when the gates were open..) loading their wagons stealing the boilers and metal...
and the Polish imigramts in the flats stealing the copper cables...
I know..I saw it and walked up to them and took their photographs...
and I suspect it was these people cutting and burning power cables that caused the recent fire..
Maybe the people around there have had enough of Eldon Grove being invaded and robbed by outsiders..
Maybe the kids are trying to keep them out... and thats what I think for what its worth..

There's nowhere I wouldn't go and I certainly wouldn't run from a few kids. I know some people make themselves an easy looking target. Looking scared and weary. That's some peoples problem. It's like dogs, you either can face them or you can't and walk all around the place to avoid one. Not good

And just to keep it on track...

I lived in Eldon st. for 5 years ('91 to '96) and though there were problems with the flats, caused by outsiders,it wasn't always!! I dont know who's responsible for the management of these, but I can't see why they've been allowed to get into such a state, as they were fitted out inside,to a fairly good standard!

Who were these lads then and what is their problem ? ?
They are local people Linda.. and their problem is they are fed up with people entering Eldon Grove dwellings and stealing everything out of there....the gates were left wide open and wagons were loading up stealing what they could...stripping the flats of the electricity cables for the copper as well....
As I see it, no one has a right to chase anyone off from anywhere....
I disagree with you Linda... the police never gave a toss, I saw these pick up trucks coming and going all day taking what they wanted...
The Council never gave a toss.. the gates were wide open for about a week and thats how this came about..
- it's not their private property is it ??..
No its not Linda... they just happen to live in the surrounding streets and were probably fed up with nobody doing anything about whet I mentioned above...
If all this happened on your doorstep Linda would you chase people you thought were up to no good ?..
I think you would... I know I would..
george t by the way has not been accused of anything...
he comes into the category above of local people not knowing who is up to what...

I'm uneducated ?...my grammar may not be the best but what is that lot above ?
should'nt there be a few punctuation marks here and there ?
......were not the ones who vandalise
Wrong... I know for a fact it was "explorers" who kicked open the door of the Jesse Hartley dockers clock...
and kicked in the old dock building windows next to it to get access..
I know the "explorer" who did that....
Dont ask me to name him, I wont.... visit other Liverpool chatrooms and you will see his photos inside the places I mention.

Well, I agree that's wrong - people just walking in and stripping out what they want - it's a dam-n cheek.
It's a shame that those flats have been left to the mercy of any Tom Dick & Harry taking what they want. Of course people would get very angry about that. It's a pity there wasn't some kind of security guarding the place.
But surely it's ok for people to take some photos ??
It all sounds a bit territorial and would make me think twice about going near there with my camera

What puzzles me is why a person who apparently cares so passionately about the waste of resources, whether related to energy use, theft from property, or vandalism -- and who claims to have witnessed it going on for such a lengthy period, never actually got around to doing something about it. If I lived in the area where this kind of thing was happening, I would have got on to the Corpy within a day or two and demand that something were done. It doesn’t ring true somehow…
And why would that person feel the need to harangue anyone who doesn't automatically accept everything he says? It doesn't make for a good dialogue if members are expected to apologise to each other all the time. It seems fair enough to expect that people fall out from time to time, but this is at least the third time this particular kind of aggression has arisen on recent Threads involving this same member. I find it difficult to believe that he isn't looking for a fight. Maybe I'm alone in feeling this sense of disquiet... but at least I feel I can say this knowing that I won't be upsetting that person, given that he won't be reading this... I suppose that no-one else feels able to comment though?
I come and go when I want Linda... I take pics there regularly and have never had a problem..

If Gerard means me then in this instance I would have to say he is correct. I didn't expect any aggro when I and the others went there the other week and neither would I expect any aggro if I went there alone whether anyone I came across was known to me or not.
I've been approached when taking photos in Toxteth and the Dingle though and thought oh ho but all turned out to be ok and they we're genuinely interested that someone should be taking a photo of buildings they pass every day probably without giving them a second glance - except for a lad that shouted 'Hey don't be taking a photo of me' as he emerged from some flats when I would have had to have been physic to know he was going to emerge like that. :)
Personally, I thought the gates were open to Eldon Grove that Sunday because workmen were about somewhere. Someone, somewhere must have reported it then as they're locked again now.
I agree it all got a bit silly a few posts ago but a wind up was admitted and an apology given so as was said, let's move on.

You shouldn't take it personally, or take it as a slight on explorers. We have a somewhat touchy member here who seems to be capable of picking several squabbles on a single Thread, all within the space of an hour or two. (See Post No.95). Trouble is, it usually results in the Thread being closed down and the contents lost, which is a shame. But I don't think the answer is to ingratiate ourselves with him; so long as nobody loses their temper we should be all right to say what we think.

1) I will do when I feel it's appropriate. I can pull a thread without warning and without explanation if I wish.
2) This isn't my full time job, although at times like this it surely feels like. It's just as stressfull.
3) My full time job is very time consuming and stressfull and takes up most of my time.
4) I have small children at home.
Yo! is a free site and will always remain that so long as people want it and use it for its intended purpose. Liverpool past, present and future. We may have a few blips along the way and have doine in the past but we always get through them because of the support of the community, ie you.
Here is a community that I set up selflessly with the aim of changing people's perceptions of Liverpool and Liverpool people. I can't underestimate its impact on the internet. Its been huge.
I dont visit any other Liverpool site but the feedback suggests, mine is propbably the most popular Liverpool website out there. It remains a free open resource that we all have contributed to in one way or another.

Nobody more than me.. I can assure you of that ..
And Nobody is doing more than me to make sure Eldon Grove will not be forgotten..
Eldon Grove is my heritage... the place my dad played as a boy...
next to the street where my dad was born..
It is over the road from where I live and it is steeped in my family history..
Edited... the place I played as well as a boy...
I played footy there plenty of times with my mates.
And... the area my grandad played as a boy..
he was born just off Eldon Grove as well.
I am the last person anywhere that would want to sabotage and ruin
a thread about Eldon Grove...
Eldon Grove is me... and my family before me.....
The arrow on the left points to the actual Dutch Cottage my dad was born in on Arley St in 1919..
my cous reckons it was in one of them right opposite The Non Pareil
My grandad, my dads dad, was born in Gildart Gardens where the other arrow is..
Thats just a small bit of info about my immediate family around Eldon Grove..
I had cousins who lived in the area.. I have cousins still in the immediate area..
and I had family that actually lived in Eldon Grove dwellings..
Me ruin a thread on Eldon Grove ?...
sorry, never in million years would I do that..

Good to see you standing up for order and reason on this occasion, Pennylane!
I suspect, however, that you’ve arrived in the middle of the latest tantrum and have rather rushed to judgment here. Did you really work your way through all the stages of the escalation that went on here? - I can’t say I can really blame you if you didn’t though!
I certainly would accept that I am not best placed to play the role of peacemaker where this person is concerned, but I should like you and others to understand that my intervention was certainly not intended to ‘start it up again’, but rather to re-direct on to myself the free-flowing aggression that was already apparent and beginning to fasten on one convenient target after another. If you don’t believe me, just look at the record… unless it’s already been rewritten!
You must remember that on a previous but quite recent occasion, when I sat back and did nothing, two members were goaded into losing their tempers and replying in kind. By drawing the hostility on to myself, I believe a similar situation was avoided as I was determined not to be drawn into hostilities. As a result there was no need for the Thread to be pulled.

from 2005
It's a bloody shame the way its been left. A work colleague of mine who lives oppposite says its always on fire!
Sent from the back of Michael Caine's Mini Cooper S, holding on for dear life......
I first remember it being on fire about 1995/6 when the students were in there. I lived in O'Connell Road then.

That's true Spike, just look at the fantastic organising skills of commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Blackstock St bombing - not.....

It's hard to believe but Eldon Grove isn't Listed.
One of the lamp-posts is.
Albert Dock.
Joseph Sharples says on p104 in his book 'Liverpool':
"Demolition was a threat from 1960 as a myriad of development proposals came and went."
I thought I remembered seeing the Eldon Grove Labourers' Dwellings on some official list of Grade II-listed buildings... I don't think it was just lamp-posts that were being referred to! I've only just realised that's the full name of the housing scheme we're talking about on this Thread... But I suppose I must be mistaken, if there's talk of demolishing them?
On the other hand, it could well explain all those fires... accidental on purpose, I'm thinking? (Wouldn't be a first!)

if there's talk of demolishing them?
On the other hand, it could well explain all those fires... accidental on purpose, I'm thinking? (Wouldn't be a first!)
isn't that what happened with Thingwall house ? It was 'purposely' left to rot at the mercy of vandalism and arson.

It's a name that fascinates me because Summer Seat makes you think of some rural idyllic setting surrounded by flowering shrubs and singing birds ! ha! :)
When you come to think about it, there are probably lot's of names around like that - names of places that look nothing like how they sound :)

It's true. I've read that the steep hill of Everton and down into Kirkdale, and heading across towards Bootle was a place where the upper classes would walk to take in the fresh sea air and admire the views over the river. The area was a kind of rural retreat in days gone by.

Spot on Lindy! Ken Dodd even predicted it would be burnt down - because he knew that property developers were interested... And so it came to pass... And there are so many other examples...

So, who reclaimed it for the 'labouring classes'? It does look a bit like the Port Sunlight housing erected by Lord Leverhulme for his soap workers. But who would be the enlightened philanthropist in this instance? -- I see there was a bottle factory nearby (Shades of Beryl Bainbridge?) ... but would that have been important enough to have had the funding for such a venture?... Anyone know?

I'd guess it was just a natural development, as the city expanded. The better off, moved further away from the growing industry, and their place was taken by the working classes. The development of social housing, like Eldon place, was pioneered by Liverpool, though this is later than St.Martins cottages, which were the first!

I live on the doorstep, I'm around there all the time taking photos...
I get on with the kids and they are all OK..I'll vouch for that personally.
100% spot on.... if I see macho men "explorers" in combat keks trying to look dead hard hanging around there I'll tell them where to go as well....
I was 1 of them explorer's confronted by say 8 black tracksuit clad scum, aged between say 16-18 the other day mate, they spotted us going in & at 1st,they thought we were coppers with the trying to be funny comments of "what yer doing there copper??" then when the penny dropped which was after 5 mins because we all know how thick the black tracky scum can be & they tried to tax us...
We made our way around to the front of the building to which a few minutes later the clad followed us in,at this point i thought sod it,it's not worth the hassle,we got out but still the gang continued to follow us all the way to Grt Homer St then we lost em..
I am not what you said, this so called "macho men "explorers" in combat keks trying to look dead hard hanging around" i was simply trying to document the place by simply takin photographs like other's before me have & you have also done yourself ...
I have been a explorer for a few years now & really enjoy it,i do not break into buildings or steal from buildings,i simply just take pics & leave. I feel documentation is important esp when a building has been closed for a number of years & the community is trying do something about it & if i have pics of a particular building they are trying to get up & running, i will always give my pics free of charge to the community group & the Lpool echo to which i have done in the past...
So i think there is a big difference in someone walking around a site in a pair of combat kecks with a camera & tripod than a person walking around tooled up with instruments to strip & steal...

Got it now! I thought at first maybe it was intended to read WEIMAR - a possible reference to the locals having declared themselves to be an independent republic, as in Germany?
Meanwhile, amidst all the recent name-calling and ranting, perhaps a query I raised has been overlooked? Can anyone confirm or deny my belief that the Eldon Grove Labourers' Cottages/ Dwellings - whatever the proper name is - was designated as a Listed Building? If so, why are we just bemoaning its passing instead of reminding the Corpy and getting them to chase up the owner? He's presumably playing the usual game of lying low and hoping it will be destroyed beyond repair...

It's proper name is Eldon Grove and according to a couple of earlier posts, all 3 blocks, the surrounding railings and lamps are indeed listed. However, certain circumstances can render them to be de-listed and demolished.

So, has this actually happened already - or is there a developer standing by and living in hope?
Went back inside Eldon Grove again yesterday and was surprised to find that the top flats have an internal staricase up to another level.

The council are well aware of the gate situation, it looks to me like they don't give a toss about Eldon Grove..
makes you wonder, doesn't it ?... let everybody loose in the place knocking it to pieces stealing what they want..
what then ?... an easy excuse to demolish..?

As you can see,the flats had been modernised to a fairly good standard, again, so why weren't they let?????
Only a few were completed Steve and it seems the developer had problems letting them to release some more funds for the rest as the tenants would have been living on a building site for quite some time. It's a shame really as it looks like he had a good go.

I think I`ve posted this from 2008 before, the rear of the buildings with new sky lights and windows installed
Yes, those skylights never existed in the original building and stairs were put in the renovated flats to take you up into the roof space. A good idea and a pity these didn't work out.
