Did anyone see the pathetic excuse for a comedy show by Harry Enfield and his mate whose name I can't remember last week? Cut a long story short Abramovich wants to buy LFC's European history, Scousers appear complaining and saying it is European city of culture next year, and thus it is implied that this is absurd for Liverpool to be cultured.
Why I find this offensive is because it is a form of racism in that it ethnically satirises the people of liverpool as badly dressed, 70's permed prats.who are thick and aggressive.
This is a form of racial stereotyping that would be unheard of against Blacks or Asians so why is it ok to do this to Liverpool people?
Liverpool has one of the fastest growing economies in Britain is a cosmopolitan and chic city, with a sophisticated city centre and 3 or 4 universities at the forefront of research. Liverpool has a wealth of art galleries and museums, worldclass parks wealthy suburbs, a strong middle class and one of the fastest growing airports in Britain. It hosts the worlds premier horse racing event and has 2 or 3 world class football teams.
No doubt there will be people who say you can't laugh at yourself, but I can I find many things about Liverpool very amusing but this show is harming our image across the country and the world, it is damaging investment because people still perceive the city as a provincial crime ridden backwater. I think this stereotyping hints of jealousy and I don't find it or Harry funny.
