Great stuff :handclap:

Just been looking through my London pics and there's one or two I've thought, hmm, that would be a good 'un on HDR. Good sky but foreground's in shadow, or good foreground and a washed-out sky :PDT_Xtremez_12:

What camera do you use?

Max

Photoshop can do It In the Auotmate part.

It's mostly best for pics of cloud formations In the sky I reckon.

If you have Bracket Exposure on your camera you should be able to make a HDR or Raw settings.

ANd In Photoshop you go to Automate than merge to HDR and merge at least 2 of the same pic. Best to use a tripod so every things nice and evenly merged.

Then you can adjust It to the way you like It.

Pete Carr told me I could use Bracket exposure too so as soon as I found that on my camera It worked.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Can you use ordinary Photoshop or do you need CS2..

Also...And I know this is gonna make me look daft but here goes.
I believe you have to "merge" 3 seperate Images.??..(Not sure on that either)

So if you do merge 3 seperate Images does that mean you have to take the same photo 3 times ?

Max
05-20-2007, 11:31 PM
Not sure about other photoshops I use CS2 though.

Yeah you merge 3 of the same Images and no you don't take the pic 3 times, you go to P settings on your Sony, then press the button with the 3 rectangle logos on It until you get to bracket exposure.

Bracket exposure takes the pic 3 times for you.

20-odd replies and nobody has mentioned this...

Free comprehensive HDR guide here (http://www.vanilladays.com/hdr-guide/)

Personally I used Photomatrix, which I think can be trialled for free. It's an excellent application, designed for the job and capable of excellent results.

Is it all in the software with that?
What I mean is; can you get those results with a bog standard 4Mp digicam or do you need a big posh camera with all the big lenses and such?

No no, you don't need a DSLR. Photomatrix will create an HDR file from JPEG images. The requirement is that you have to be able to shoot the same scene at different exposures, so ideally you need to be able to change the shutter speed of the camera.

Pete's guide (http://www.vanilladays.com/hdr-guide/) should give you further info. If you're not sure about how to get the camera to do what you want, post up the make/model up here and I'll try and help.

Although the software does the clever maths part, you should be aware that it takes quite a lot to get a decent HDR image. Just sending in your images and clicking 'Go' won't usually do, so it's worth reading the guide thoroughly and having a go. Also, when looking at your image (whether it's good or not), think about how you could improve it or what you could try different next time. That way you'll keep progressing and getting better results, and ultimately you'll get more from photography.

Just before this thread goes any further I want to remind people that HDR processing an image does not make the image good or "cool". If you HDR a rubbish image its still a rubbish image just processed differently. I've seen so many terrible HDR images online because people jump on the trend***** bandwagon, process their images and produce some really terrible results.

You can do HDR from a compact but due to the sensor size compact's images are noisier than DSLR's and when you HDR an image it tends to bring out the noise.

snappel
05-21-2007, 01:05 PM
That is true. I've seen some horrendous ones with halos round all the features, odd-looking clouds, etc. Some of them have been my own, which is why I didn't post them!! I think it's a tough thing to master, to get good results.

Ditto. I spent hours yesterday trying to force an image to work but it just didn't and I gave up.

Think I'll keep having ago with the Graffiti HDR's.

Any advice I welcome and why I posted It.

Personally I think I did good bringing out the pavement sqaure stones but the graffiti and wall Itself could be better.

Hopefully I'll do some good HDR and normal shots of those Gormley statues In Formby tomorrow.

A better version, just couldn't get the graffiti In fully without the floor showing, when I took It.

Keeping It on my flickr as a learning experience though.
