My mum remembers the no 10 when she lived on Prescott Road.

I remember it being so busy like that with the traffic. I can remember getting off the bus somewhere by Woolworths - I think there was a stop by there.
I'm wondering what year WH.Smith opened in Church st ?? There is a Stylo shoe shop there on that photo - and I can't remember it.
I presume the pic was taken in very early 1970s.
I worked in WH.Smith from 1977'ish
WH.Smith was where Coopers was.

great photo's,
my abiding memory when I was little of going to town with my Mum is the noise of the bus brakes, now I can understand why looking at all that traffic !
sometimes when I'm in a different town or city and I hear those bus brakes it takes me right back to being 5 years old holding my Mum's hand in town.

Glad i brought back some memories!
I remember crossing the road outside woolies with a poiceman there in his little box directing the traffic!
The bus brakes screeching were always a feature of Church St/Lord St... It got worse when Church St was pedestrianised and the buses went along Whitechapel , everyone running across the road in front of them outside Mothercare , anyone remember the Crosville bus that ended up in a shop front somewhere round where Wade Smith is now.

Crosville bus's seemed to be totally different to 'Normal' bus's, and I don't just mean the shape and style. I am sure that they had the loudest brakes too.
Not only that but they could take you to far away places that a normal bus just couldn't.
Great pics there MTT. Check these out too.

Yes, the couple who run 20th Century Images have an unbelievable archive of glass plate negatives from Ellis Mann and other vanished photographic companies, all available as reasonably priced prints. Liverpool, Wirral, Chester, transport, work, all sorts of fascinating stuff and the quality is unsurpassed. A mooch around their 'Reflections' website is highly recommended-

They used to live up here but inherited property in Hastings and run the business from there now.

Do you remember the smell in Cooper's food hall? Predominantly ground coffee but intermingled with a variety of food aromas.
Nectar for the nose!

the buildings were known as "coopers buildings" as long as I ever knew, they were hit in the war by bomb damage, an old tutor of mine at tech was an apprentice assigned to fix up ther bomb damage
Wish Church Street was still like that, I could cycle through It easier then.

Ah, the Tatler. Used to go in there with mates but several strange individuals used to frequent the place and you had to keep a tight hold on your nuts!

Yes, that's right. Not certain, but i think they changed the name when they moved south. They're very amenable so if you're looking for specific material, don't hesitate to contact them. They'd be the first to admit that only a small fraction of their collection has made it to their fab website yet.

I think I shall have to build a time machine to take pics of Liverpool In the past when there was more classy architecture not getting smashed down.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Before the 70s/80s, there looked like there was cool stuff to photograph like In Chambre Hardman's stuff.

Church street was fabulous then, I remember it well...I wish I could walk into that photograph, turn left down Tarleton street and walk into Hobbies Toy and Model shop....Then go and have a "ride" on the escalators in Lewis's...The only store in town who had them I believe and such a novelty to an 8 year old. Great and wonderful memories indeed.

Yes Klaatu. I remember Hobbies...I used to love going into that shop. It was great back then...I remember going into Lewis's as a kid and it seemed massive - like Macy's or Harrod's or something :)

Just read through this thread. I only vaguely remember the buses in this part of Church Street, although I remember Woolies vividly.
What I really do remember is the corner of Church Street, where Mothercare used to be. This is where the buses turned, after the first part of Church Street was pedestrianised. God - that was a scary and dangerous crossing. Even now I feel a bit sick at what I used to see there - I'm sure there were loads of accidents at this junction.

Yes, you're right Burkhilly. Bad junction that. Horne Bros was where MacDonald's now stands. I think I remember someone getting killed at the junction there
