ChrisGeorge 05-10-2007, 07:42 PM Battle of North Point, September 12, 1814, between the American militia from Baltimore, in blue uniforms in the foreground, and the British regulars advancing across the open field in the distance. Baltimore held out, although the British technically won this particular battle before marching on toward the entrenchments defending the eastern side of the city then deciding to withdraw when the Royal Navy failed to get past Fort McHenry and into the harbor to shell the American defenses.

I used to use a CCS (website (http://www.ccscentre.co.uk/)) camera bag and it was bombproof. Dropped mine down a mountain once at it survived unscratched. Unofrtunately, I lost the bag containing the camera and two used rolls of film coming down another mountain, wading through waist-high bracken for an hour. Got to the bottom of the hill and didn't have my camera or two days worth of (hopefully) excellent photos anymore :PDT_Xtremez_42:
This is one I've passed on my bike in Slaidburn, Lancashire. I think these memorials are most poignant in quiet little villages like this, but this one really made me stop and ponder for a few minutes.

Hi muds
I believe what you show is what were termed "pillboxes" (http://freespace.virgin.net/martin.farncombe/gardens/gardenhtm/pillboxes.htm) and you are right they were concrete defense points in the case of an enemy invasion. As I recall, there was, or still is, one on Springwood Avenue, or else conceivably the one from Springwood might be one of these that you photographed at the old Speke Airport removed to the airport. I hope something is going to be done to preserve them and they won't be junked.
All my best

Aye, the one at Springwood is still there - pass it on a Friday night to go to Allerton Hall - the pub in the park.
There is also another one on the A41 by the Golf Course near to Spital - I'll try and take a picture next time I'm there.

ChrisGeorge 06-19-2007, 05:30 AM A BAOR (British Army of the Rhine) Christmas card, sent from my grandad to nan in Xmas 1945.
Hi SteH
Very interesting card. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Your card reminded me of the following card that I picked up among my late uncle's effects when I visited his flat in Poole. It is a card from that same Christmas of 1945 and was sent by my Dad who had married my Mum in April 1945 and who was serving in the RAF medical corps. He sent it to my Uncle Doug (my Mum's brother) who was serving with the British Control Commission in occupied Germany.
The one side folds out to show a panorama of occupied Europe from Denmark and the western zone to the eastern zone, with a Russian dancing with a bear at extreme right. On the other side, on just one of the five panels is the Christmas greetings under which my father has written his inscription to Doug.

Sadly the memorial was in a much worse state than now. It was repaired a few years ago after severe vandalism. The odd bit of graffitti pales into insignificance with the severe structural damage that the memorial previously sustained.

On an objective basis, do you think graffiti and vandalism is worse in the north end of the city than in the south?
