Gerard 06-06-2007, 06:41 PM I think Chris its a Osteospurnum.."Cape Daisy".
It is perenial but will not survive british winters unless you have it in a really sheltered position or live down south..you can lift it and pot it and put it in the shed and keep it watered and plant it out again this time next year
Keep it well watered steve and dead head when the flowers fade..
Just pinch it back with a finger and thumb to a new bud and you will get a new flush of flowers till the 1st frosts.
Nice piccie Lad. :handclap:

(see attachment).
Besides, I knew what it was without doing a Google search.
Chris.
This is supposed to be a friendly site.
What if I was a newbie and had made a mistake?
ChrisGeorge 06-22-2007, 01:29 PM Hi Philip
I only did the Google search to show you some photographs of what is called a Rose of Sharon here. Absolutely fine that the Royal Horticultural Society calls a different shrub the Rose of Sharon. I have learned something, so thanks. These things may blur between countries. I think another case is what is called a "daddy longlegs" which in England I would have used to designate a crane fly but that here is used as a name for a harvester spider.

Its an Ivy leaf geranium Chris..the type you see hanging from verandas and the like in exotic places around the world.
Better known as trailing geranium in the UK..
I had a few in pots on a warm west facing wall and they came back year after year although not fully UK hardy.
Some are fragrant and when you brush the leaves it gives of an amazing lemonie like fragrance.
An excellent plant.

shytalk 07-20-2007, 06:18 PM The first and last pictures are the American version of the Rose of Sharon, I know they are a completely different flower to the ones of the same name in the UK.
The middle two are strange plants which are locally known as Naked Ladies. I don't know the real name. They come up in spring with masses of long thin leaves, similar to Daffodil leaves. They die and a couple of months later the flowers appear. If anyone can tell me the real name I would appreciate it. They are a deeper pink than they appear in the picture.
Just Googled them, real name Amaryliss of the Belladonna species so quite poisonous.
lindylou 07-20-2007, 07:40 PM I know those Amaryliss, they are popular here at Christmas time.
Didn't know though that they are from the Belladonna family and poisonous
There are few plants that are said to be poisonous, ie; Laburnum (Ladies Fingers).
shytalk 07-21-2007, 08:23 PM I only found out by looking them up on google. Need to keep the dog away from them.

I'll start it of eh..
Why is "Windrock" dangerous to Roses and what can be done to prevent it..
lindylou 07-26-2007, 03:51 PM OMG ! lol ! I don't know.
lindylou 07-26-2007, 03:56 PM Here's a problem :
Vine weevils :PDT_Xtremez_42: they are a bladdy pain !!
They appear most summers, but this year I've noticed more than usual.
They are playing hell with my Bizzie Lizzies which they love to munch. I'm finding all my lovely petals chewed every morning
They tend to hide away at the back or underneath pots. I know where to find the little blighters now.
seriouly though, if you get the Vine weevil grubs in your roots it can severly undermine your plants growth. You can usually tell there are grubs in the roots if you see the plant developing kinked or curly leaves.
Gerard 07-26-2007, 04:00 PM OMG ! lol ! I don't know.
Windrock Lind is a danger in the winter when the winds get up and "Rock" the rose bush which leads to the roots moving and small air pockets forming which hold water and turn to Ice..which can kill the bush.
Solution...Prune the bush Early January and give it a good dollop of Bonemeal
Yes in January..trust me...I've got an ology in Garrrrrdnin:)
And the Rose will flourish..

Vine weevils generally attack plants in pots and containers.
They are a horrible little whiteish grub.
Buy Nematodes to get shut.
lindylou 07-26-2007, 04:09 PM :PDT11 I love people to take an interest in their gardens. :PDT11
the beauty of nature is a wonderful thing and should be encouraged. :)
My dad has got a mysterious flowering plant which has appeared in his garden. No one knows what it is or where it came from. My dad says a seed must have somehow got into the soil - maybe blown in by the wind or carried by a bird. Anyway, the plant is growing huge like a triffid
it has blue lantern type flowers on a shiney black stem. yes- black !!
we havn't seen anything like it before. The flowers are sort of like a hanging Chinese Lantern style.
Perhaps it's an alien landed, Ha,Ha!
Maybe it will turn out to be somekind of 'orrible weed, but he is letting it grow until we can find out what it is.
I'll post a photo of it soon as I can, but I'm not going 'till next week.

lindylou 07-26-2007, 04:20 PM Vine weevils generally attack plants in pots and containers.
They are a horrible little whiteish grub.
Buy Nematodes to get shut.
Thanks Gerard. Do you think any time of the year is ok to add the Nematodes ? Do you just mix them in with the soil? I've never used this before.
Yes, the weevil grubs are horrible white things like maggots.
The mature Vine weevils look like smallish black beetles.
lindylou 07-26-2007, 04:22 PM I look forward to scrutinsing this specimen Lind in the next edition of Geds Gardening clinic..Ha Haaaaaaaa..Lol
Sounds like some kind of Mother Natures Hybrid
Gerard, we should call it 'Compost Corner' like Tizwas (remember that !)

This stuff used to be very expensive...
It's gone down in price so it wont be that dear in Rapid or a decent Garden Centre..
Go to Williams' in Gateacre and ask the Staff..They are very helpful.

Im unsure about this one..Readers Digest Encyclopaedia coming out again me thinks..
Now decided phredd its a "Pusteblume"
"The flower matures into a globe of fine filaments that are usually distributed by wind, carrying away the seed-containing achenes. This globe (receptacle) is called the "dandelion clock", and blowing it apart is a popular pastime for children. In German it's called a Pusteblume, translated as "blow flower". The number of blows required to completely rid the clock of its seeds is deemed to be the time of day."
ChrisGeorge 08-02-2007, 11:50 PM Id say that is a Hydrangea Taff
Definitely a hydrangea, Taffy. My grandmother had a number of them in the front garden of 76 Aigburth Hall Avenue when I was growing up. :)
Chris
ChrisGeorge 08-03-2007, 12:06 AM I have posted a similar photo of this before but I have just learned the botanical name of it, so I am going to post this new view. I photographed this plant in the Enid A. Haupt Gardens of the Smithsonian on the Mall in Washington, D.C. At the western end of the Arts and Industries Building they have an attractive gathering of tropical plants including this one. It is, I have learned, Heliconia rostrata, otherwise known as (appropriately, I think you will agree!) Lobster Claw.
