Thanks, Gerard. The camera is a Samsung Digimax 240 that I recently acquired after years of using a 35 mm Pentax and Minolta! I am looking forward to taking a lot of photos of Liverpool while I am in your fair city, May 15 to May 21. :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Its the one car I won't ever part with. Bought it for 800 quid and it was virtually black when I got it from the grime. Spent a bit of money and tons of elbow grease on the bodywork and interior and got it spot on now. I couldn't find anything better, it cruises (auto box) like you're driving around in a limo and when you feel the need to put some boyracer in his place, you just stick your foot down. It's no wonder plod said it was the best car they ever used.
Even though it's done 200,000 miles and it's cost me a bit o money today (understatement there...), I've got it spot on now. Where else could I find a herse that does 0-60 in 7.2 seconds for £800 :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

The Kiepenkerl is a rural folk figure from Munster in Westphalia, an itinerant seller of eggs, rabbits, and fowl, rendered in this stainless steel modern sculpture by artist Jeff Koons -- there's another K for you!!! It can be seen opposite the Hirschhorn Museum on the Mall in Washington, D.C. (the red scaffolding-like structure behind is another sculpture and not part of Kiepenkerl).

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/207/495874462_89309e6a36_b.jpg

I remember the Kiepenkerl figure from my visit to Germany some years ago and as I recall there is a restaurant of that name in Munster. From one of the plaques on the base of the sculpture, it would appear that Koons's version might be a copy of other Kiepenkerl statues by August Schmiemann done in 1896 and Albert Mazotti in 1953.

Wigan in the Premiership?

Nay, say it isn't so lad... th' Latics going up to top flight?
Yon Lancs place that George Orwell joked had no pier?
The Road to Wigan Pier? Will it be Wigan without peer?

What fans of top flight clubs will be crying in their beer?
Chelsea, the Gunners, or Red Devils to crash at the JJB?
From 1932 to 2005 never at the top, they wuz sad sacks

of th' old English Fourth Division; 27 years ago non-League,
now only seven games away from the top flight, bring on
West Ham's claret and blue, the black cats of Sunderland.

Have a drink at Ye Old Tree and Crown, take a jar, Orwell.
It's Wigan Athletic! Aye so it is, Wigan Athletic, without peer!

Christopher T. George

Great Stuff Chris..:handclap:

Hi Phredd

Judging by the Lewis Carroll signboard it must be Daresbury in Cheshire. Never been there but I know about it.

Phredd, I thought at first you were saying you were born there, but I see now you were quoting one of Lewis Carroll's lesser known works (http://216.239.51.104/search?q=cache:MNQIjcAu4CwJ:www.lookingforlewiscar roll.com/lovepoetry2.html+%22The+happy+spot+where+I+was+bor n.%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us). :)

The site now belongs to the National Trust and needs some tender care.
The Vicarage foundations are laid out on the ground but are now covered over in grass and weed.
It is quite a walk, two miles across fields, from the site to the Church in Daresbury. Industry has taken over the trodden path Lewis took to get to school and church.

Well I sold the farm to take my woman
Where she used to be
We left our kin and all our friends
Back there in Tennessee
And I bought those one way tickets
She had often begged me for
And they took us to the streets of Baltimore

Well her heart was filled with gladness
When she saw those city lights
She said the prettiest place on earth was
Baltimore at night
Well a man feels proud to give his woman
What she's longing for
And I kinda liked the streets of Baltimore

Then I got myself a factory job
I ran an old machine
And I bought a little cottage
In a neighborhood serene
And every night when I'd come home
With every muscle sore
She'd drag me through the streets of Baltimore

Well I did my best to bring her back
To what she used to be
Then I soon learned she loved those bright lights
More than she loved me
Now I'm a going back on that same train
That brought me here before
While my baby walks the streets of Baltimore
While my baby walks the streets of Baltimore

I don't like these huge ads at all. I think they are too crying. I small plate is okay, but these huge plates are ........ Especially because they don't fit to the architecture. If I were the mayor, I would inhibit that. I think that's as much environmental pollution as beer cans or paper waste on the ground.

Somehow, those plates are a symbol of our time: "Making money, whenever and wherever!"

Atany
03-03-2008, 10:00 PM
Or look there, the Times Square. At first it looks quite interesting, because of the many lights. But if you look more precisely, the you're seeing, that all that stuff are only stupid ad-plates. Budweiser, Virgin group, Barcode and so on.
I mean, if somebody would put a lot of such plates on the walls of his living room, you would say he is really nuts, wouldn't you?
Sure, without that stuff the city would be quite dark. But isn't it possible to lighten a shop on a beautiful way? Something what really looks good? What's a pleasure to look at? Only to cry the name of the company in big letters is kinda stupid and not very inventive, isn't it?

Here is a listed building that my Great great Granfather occupied in Victorian times. It is called "The Ryfel" and is in Woolton Park, Woolton village backing onto Reynolds park where he was head gardener. His name was Thomas Clare.

My youngest who was 16 this week decided that as St. Johns precinct is crap in her opinion, we'd all go to Manchester - me driving of course. As the missus and other daughters came too, I thought it would be a good idea to have a stroll around and capture some of their architecture - I do like Manchester, and Leeds.

I met back up with them just in time to take out a re-mortgage for some tea, coffee and cakes in Starbucks.

We parked facing Strangeways, walked past what was once Boddingtons brewery, only the lone chimney left now. Behind the M.E.N. and up past Victoria Station to the Arndale.

Here is the printworks which has the hard rock cafe.

Thanks John. Don't I know it, though she claims she hunted down the bargains and got more than she would have for the same price here - and everyone wears the same this and that blah, blah, blah - you know you can't win with women - even young women.

Here's Manchester's real Rovers return, but in Chapel st, not Corrie.

Boastful without a doubt. I only go when Liverpool play there, if sent to a conference with work, or to use the airport - and then only if the destination isnt on offer from Liverpool. I will never ever set foot in the Trafford centre.

I much prefer our airport though, lots less hassle but no option to go to Manc this year.
