Many here will know of Robbo176's(Mandy) daughter,Lauren, who has recently had treatment, and surgery for cancer, and has been doing well,up till now! Unfortunately,Lauren has to return to hospital on Monday,as this has possibly returned,so I would like to wish her all the best, and hope any tests prove this unfounded!
Steve.

Mandy, you know everyone here will be thinking of you and Lauren. I do hope all goes well, and as Steve says that the tests will prove the concerns to be unfounded.
To say you must be so worried is an understatement. You must be going through some real anguish just now.
Sending my thoughts and best wishes,

My son is an Oncologist, He used to work for Cancer Research UK, until they laid him off due to lack of funds. He is now working as a Consultant in a hospital in the South of England.
He told me if Cancer Research UK had enough money for cancer research many many more cancers could be cured, it is only lack of funds preventing it. So I donate to them with a regular monthly Standing Order from my Bank.
If everyone did it what a difference it would make. The Celebs and football players could donate a lot more. They are not immune from it.
Do it, you may like it. NOW.
ALL THE VERY BEST WISHES FOR LAUREN, MANDY AND ROB.
burkhilly

I make regular contributions to Cancer Research Brian. However, I suspect that the Drugs Companies would rather continue to sell their drugs, than find a cure. A cure would end their massive profits. You must be so proud of your son..............and you're right people should give more to this wonderful cause. More money means more doctors and more likelihood of finding a cure for this horrible disease.

I am sure I heard some 'good' news on the cancer fight front this morning on the radio. Some form of gene therapy. I have not been able to trace the slot, but I did find this report on Immunotherapy. The section of the programme of interest is 20 minutes in, if you click on 'programme information' you will see the running order which will tell you who is speaking and something about what is said...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00bsm9w/Health_Check_15_11_2010/
---------- Post added at 05:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:49 PM ----------
The programme I was looking for cocerned some sort of artificial DNA (I think) this is similar to something discovered in the 70's which took some years to be brought into production. The doctor/scientist speaking thought that as we know way more about DNA and our G-Nome now things could move a great deal faster this time around.
[for those who know a bit more about all this the original discovery was given the a name of a city in California, which I cannot now recall]
captain kong
11-15-2010, 07:25 PM
My son, a few years ago was researching taking the body`s `imune system and genetically modifying it and putting it back into the body, the immune system is then more aggressive and it then attacks the cancer cells. The body`s immune system does not attack the cancer cell because it is part of the body and not an intruder, so when it is genetically modified it does attack it.
In certain cases this does work and saves lives. He also worked in California for three years.
So hang in there Lauren , a lot of people are helping you, and wish you all the best.

Not the sort of news I was praying for, but that girl of yours has grit and determination (wonder where she gets that from? Lol) and they are the two things she needs most right now. You are both constantly in our thoughts.
Praying for a successful outcome.

Lovely pics Mandy. I echo what Lindy said. I have a Dublin friend here who asks about Lauren every day and a few Liverpool friends who do also. They all think she is brave and wonderful.

Hi Jenny
thank you for asking about Lauren xxx
Laurens doing quite well at the moment ,its two years this month since she was first diagnoised with the tumour in her leg ,she's still recovering from the two operations she had on her lungs in November/December & Radiotherapy in January but she's made a brilliant recovery so far & I'm hoping she'll be back at school next week
we are back at the hospital next week & fingers crossed everything is ok

thanks again everyone...Lauren has spent today bouncing on her new trampoline, you'd never guess there was anything wrong with her ...in fact I think its her attitude that has got her through it all...when anyone sends her a get well soon card she says to me why on earth did they send me a get well soon card ...I'M NOT SICK !!!
I know every case is different but a mum who lost her 13 year old daughter with the same as Lauren said that her daughter just gave up!!!...I know when both girls were in Birmingham getting their legs amputated that Lauren was first out of bed first on crutches & first to get their dressings changed....and the first home from hospital...every day I think about Alisha & thank god that Lauren is a fighter

I'm pleased to say that the doctors seem pleased with her & she doesn't have to see the doctor from Birmingham(about her leg) until September & her Oncologist till May when she'll have more scans

I posted the other day but it doesn't seem to have found it's way through cyberspace from the deepest Midlands.
Really positive news about Lauren. When we're faced with our own worries and concerns we should put them into perspective by considering what a hero she has been through many times of adversity - if she can remain positive then so should we be able to.
I think another true hero here is Mandy. I've been reading a novel which includes parents having to cope with their children suffering from various severe health problems. It's easy to forget that watching your child suffer can be harder to deal with, possibly even more painful, than suffering the same condition yourself. Respect.

thanks so much Kevin,I've met so many ,grandparents along the way its heartbreaking all doing what anyone would do when there child is sick
I think the hardest part was trying to keep all my fears inside when I just wanted to scream WHY !!!!! & to try not to cry in front of Lauren & answer her questions when I had so many of my own
I think the first few week/months I was numb everything seemed a blur & I went into autopilot
I was 6 months pregnant when we found out so my emotions were all over the place anyway...I had to have Ella early so I could stay in hospital with Lauren while she was on chemotherapy

Motherhood is certainly a badge much older than the safety-pin. A precious, shiny thing. Much burnished with many joys that make the wearing of it bearable, most of the time.
We men with our medals can only guess at the significant difference between 'pinned-on' and 'pinned-through'.
"Rock-on, mum." :)

a family I met at Alder Hey have got to through the agonising desision this week of whether to stop all treatment & let their child die....its so heartbreaking

went to see the doctor on Thursday ,she told us Laurens Chemo will begin on August 2nd but she will have to get a central (Hickman) line put in first & she has to get a full body scan tomorrow
Lauren is a bridesmaid just 3 weeks later & her hair will have fallen out by then ,which is upsetting her more than the thought of more gruelling chemotherapy
I am trying to squeeze in 6 weeks of summer holidays in just one week :(

Hi Robbo176,
Best wishes again to Lauren. I know it's not much of a consolation but most people recognize the effects of chemotherapy. I see it as a badge of courage. Bare headed or maybe a bandana instead of a wig, I'm sure Lauren will look lovely on the day. Good luck with the chemo, Lauren, looking forward to seeing you as a bridesmaid.

Hi Robbo,
Just catching up as I've been away on my hollybobs.
How much does a decent wig actually cost? Most on here have never met Lauren but she has become part of our livesthrough her courage and fortitude. I'd happily add £20 to a wig whip around if we can get one organised (please don't be offended by the suggestion).
burkhilly
07-25-2011, 03:34 PM
A decent wig can cost about £200 I think. I wouldn't mind making a donation Mandy. Anything for you to have one less thing to worry about.
Excellent suggestion - and as Kevin says, don't be offended, there is little we lot can do so let us feel like we are doing something.

Lauren had her central line put back in on Thursday...she was nil by mouth from midnight thursday until 5.15 pm ....I had to go to PALs to complain about them leaving her starving for almost 20 hours....if I'd of left my child to go without food for that long I would have been charged with neglect :gnasher:
by the time the trolley came for her she was very distressed ,after the operation she wolfed down a KFC
to make matters worse they put a canular in Laurens foot & when she said she couldn't stand up to go the toilet because it was hurting the sister told her to put her weight on her other foot!!!.....as many of you know Lauren had to have her other leg amputated
Lauren then said to the sister I'm not going the toilet unless you take out the needle & she argued with her until she took it out

Our thoughts are with you for the coming days.
On a practical level, let's do something now, rather than later. I've been puzzling about how those who wish to contribute to a wig can help. Not a good idea to post your address here, so we can send cheques, so it's a bit of a problem. I don't know if you are religious or not, but if you are, perhaps you could provide the name and address of a vicar/priest and their church, and we could post contributions to them, with cheques made out to you?
Or, send your address by PM to those expressing an interest in helping?
Or, if a member who lives and works in Liverpool would be happy to post their work address and we could post there, with you meeting up with that person to collect contributions.
Or any alternative you can think of?
Cheers,
Kevin

Mandy, like Kevin, I'd like to help too. Just let us know what you want to do. If you'd rather not give out your address via PM - I'd be quite willing to collect cheques and let you have them. I only live up the road from Alder Hey, so could meet you. Also my friend works as a nurse on the oncology ward, so I know the ward quite well.
Please let us help Lauren in this small way.

I was thinking of someone opening a bank acc for donations and we could just transfer funds to the acc then close the acc afterwards !

Marty the bank account solution seems a good one - but we have to be guided by Mandy. - Mandy I think most of us would like to help on a practical level so please don't be offended - best wishes to you all Liz

Of course you're right and I'm sure Mandy will make the right decision, whatever it is and that will be fine by us all !
Mandy, Let us know how we can help. In the meantime, I hope everything goes well.

Hi Mandy,
Mart has suggested a meet-up and offered to get contributions to you. Initially I thought this would be a problem, as many aren't in Liverpool, but there's a way around it.
How about:
We arrange a meet in the Lion Tavern. Those who want to help but can't get there can PM me and I'll give them my home address to post cheques to (Mandy - can you PM me with the name the cheques need to be made payable to?). I'll bring them with me and pass them to Mart, together with contributions made on the day. Mart then contacts you to arrange delivery.
How does that sound? Can you remind me when the wedding is, so we can ensure we do all this in time for a wig to get sorted?
Cheers,
Kevin

Given the nearness of the wedding, I don't think we've got time to arrange a meet and get money to Mandy in time. Don't know how long it takes to arrange a wig but I'll bet it is not overnight - so we need to move fast.
If those interested in helping PM me I'll send details of who to make a postal order/cheque payable to, and the address to post it to. The payee will be Mandy - I'm just the conduit to get the money to her.

If the sun isn't shining to make the marble church sparkle, that's OK. Lauren will be sparkle enough. :PDT_Aliboronz_11:

My thoughts are with you both at this very difficult time robbo, I know that you have to be strong for Lauren but you know that you have support, not least from the good people on this forum.

OK,
I now have the payee and address details.
It's going straight to Mart (Old Swan) as he can get the money to Mandy quickly. If you want the details, please PM me (I've sent them to those who have asked already).
Please make sure you include 'For Lauren' in the address, so Mart can identify it straight away.
Cheers,
Kevin

The wedding is the 20th, I'll call Mandy tomorrow and see if she's OK to pass on what I have now.
I believe there may be some coming from overseas, so will take a little longer.

Lauren came home late last night, she's feeling well at the moment....it's usually about a week after chemo that she becomes neutropenic & has to stay in hospital until her blood count recovers
I have been given the phone number for a wig shop & hopefully they'll fit her in this week
