I'm thinking of joining the modern age and getting a Wireless Router.
I have BT Braodband and just rang them to see how much it is for Wireless Router to plug and go.
£23 a month, well since I've been a loyal customer of BT for 20 years I thought this was a bargain.
Then I woke up !

What do you think is the best Wireless Router to buy as a one off payment ?

Or

Do you have one, how much was it, any problems with them etc ?

Thanks, Martin

Mines is old as the hills but still going strong its a Linksys54g.

Can't really guide you but whatever one you choosemake sure its the correct BB one ie there's the Cable type router and there's the ADSL,do you plug your modem into the telephone socket? if you do this is ADSL.

I am on Virgin with a wireless router for about £20/month PLUS line charge from BT. Service is [touch wood] fair, few problems pretty prompt in fixing the one outage. :)

P.S.
I do plug my PC in, but the x-box is wirelessly connected. :)

see if any other providers are giving a wireless router for free and once u've found on, call BT back and mention the other deal. Try and get them to throw it in

Mart - we've got Virgin Broadband and it's really good. We got the wireless router free, which I use with a laptop. Philip has the best broadband - which is like £37.00 a month but there's one band for around £20.00. Personally I'd recommend Virgin because we've had no trouble at all in the 3 years we've had it (touch wood)!

We bought our own from Maplins for about £40. (A Netgear one.)

Just buy one. Average price from £30.

Cheers all.
I forgot to say, work pays for the Braodband, monthly, getting the router is just because I want it so I think I'll buy one.
I have ADSL so thanks George and others I think I'll buy one,

Mart

I'm with Sky - one of those 'all in' packages - broadband, free router, phone and full Sky TV package. I got it during one of their deals which meant that I got the broadband for almost nothing for a few months. I now pay about £70 per month which may sound a lot but I was previously paying £28 to another company just for the broadband. I've been with BT, Talk Talk and Tiscali in the past but Sky seems to be the best service I've had.

I certainly would not pay what BT are asking.

We are with Virgin and paid them a one off fee for a Netgear router and they came out and set it up. The Virgin service is very good and if we have any problems with the TV, telephone or internet we just ring 151 and there is someone who can help and guide us.

I was just about to make a near-identical post... Never understood why anyone rents when you can buy outright for the cost of a month or two's rental. Netgear have a good reputation and a lot better than many of the 'free' offers. I have a wired model, though, for three reasons [1] they tend to be faster, [2] wireless systems can't 'see' through thick walls as in older houses , [3] some concern about living with yet more unnecessary radiation...
