Another problem !
The printer was working ok but has suddenly stopped.

Was alerted that the ink was low, so new ink cartridges have been put in but
the printer refuses to print.
I get as far as seeing the box to tell me that a test sheet has gone to print - but nothing happens. I wait for the test sheet and the printer just does not move.

I rooted around in 'admin tools' and read something about the 'print spooler' !! .. but can't make much sense of it !

Help !

Any foggy ideas why the printer is on strike ??

1) clear out all the print que's you have for the printer. You need to clear out the print spooler - this shows as an icon normally in your system tray right at the bottom of your screen on the right hand side. It will show as a printer icon - double click on that to open the print jobs that are waiting to be processed by the printer. In the drop down menu you should be able to clear the print jobs by cancelling them.

2) make sure the connections to your printer are working. Also make sure that the driver's for the printer are installed properly. You can open device manager by clicking on the hardware button to see what hardware you have installed, and more important if there any yellow symbols next to any of the hardware devices. You are looking for anything wrong with the printer device you have installed.

Open the drive manager either from the control panel or by right-clicking on the My Computer icon on the start menu and select properties from the menu that pops open.

I was just going to say all that but was beaten to it. Follow the advice above and if it doesn't work, take it back to Cammel Lairds and have a new boiler fitted.

By the way ! Mine doesn't work if I have my cam-corder on. They are incompatible. I tried a sustem of multi- USB ports but they still don't like each other.

Lindy, the first thing I ever do if I have problems, is to turn both printer & PC off at the mains, then on again.
It's worth trying. :)

Thanks.

We tried all the things suggested.
In the end we tried 'system restore' back to a previous date when all was working ok. That has done the trick. :PDT_Piratz_26:

Glad you've fixed it, but does that 'system restore' wipe out files you've created since that 'previous date'?

Hope this is useful

The System Restore feature of Microsoft Windows XP enables administrators to restore their computers to a previous state without losing personal data files (e.g. Word documents, graphic files, e-mail). System Restore actively monitors system file changes and some application file changes to record or store previous versions before the changes occurred. Users never have to think about taking system snapshots as System Restore automatically creates easily identifiable restore points, which the users can use to revert to a previous time. Restore points are created at the time of significant system events (such as application or driver install) and periodically (each day). Additionally, users can create and name their own restore points at any time. For more information, please see the System Restore| http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmb_tol_fngj.asp document on TechNet.

As System Restore monitors a core set of specified system and application file types, any downloaded or saved file which has an extension type monitored by System Restore (e.g. .exe, .dlls) and stored on a monitored drive will be lost if restoring to a point prior to the download or save. If you do not want to lose files with a monitored extension due to a restore, you should move these files to the My Documents folder or to a non-monitored partition not restored during a restore process. If you have unknowingly deleted some files due to a restore on your system, you can always recover them by undoing the restore process in question.

Thanks, John.

I'm getting better.
I actually understood some of that.

So all the files in 'My Documents' will be kept if I do a 'system restore'?

I think thats what it says but I have not put stuff in my documents and done a restore, not noticed anything missing.

We havn't got anything much stored on the pc. It's a new computer so we havn't gathered a lot of stuff as yet. There isn't anything for us to lose.

We have done system restores once or twice in the past on our old pc and never noticed anything missing.

Just restore it back to the latest possible date before the problem began so it should be done asap then there's a lesser risk of losing anything anyway. It's magical that system restore isn't it but the switching off and then back on again or restarting your pc has also worked for me in work quite a few times too.

Printer problem is sorted fine since the system restore ... but I'm back to square one not being able to do attchments on forum posts ( why havn't we got a 'banging head on wall' smilie !!?).

Remember I said in the other thread that the problem had righted itself ?

Not being able to add attachments has only happened since we got the new computer. I thought I'd have another try and found that all of a sudden it was working.

After the system restore I tried today to do a couple of attachments and it won't work again.

There must be an error somewhere but I can't think why it won't work.

Have you tried that good old turn it off and back on again Lindy or try system restore again?

Did you download any software on your new pc?
A system restore might have deleted it.
