What is it? I am looking for information, but only I can find it:

The Super Lamb Banana statue by Taro Chiezo (1998) is seen here from the front and side. The yellow-painted scupture, part banana, part lamb, stands appropriately in front of the premises of Joseph P Lamb on Carpenters Row.

I am not sure, but I am thinking that its a statue representative of the Liverpool 2008. If it is true, I like to know somes questions, for example, why is a banana and a lamb representative of the city? What people think about the statue?

Thank u!!

Thanks for reply, it´s funny the change of colour. It´s a simple statue, but I think that it´s funny. But I do not know why a banana its representative of the city!

I believe it is to do when Garston docks used to import lots and lots of bananas before the last war, Marie. Add them to the importation of lambs you have the Super Lamb Banana!

Oh! And the Lamb Banana is more than a mere simple statue!

Most Liverpool people are very fond of Lamb Banana :)

There are a minority who say they don't like this sculpture but I think the majority are very fond of it.

I love it. :) I couldn't imagine L'pool without it now.

The Superlamb Banana was not made to represent 08 though the culture company have used their logo on it as they tend to hijack things :unibrow: like the Big History Festival and the Mathew Street festival that were here before.

The Superlamb banana is now outside the newer JMU building at the Tithebarn st, Vauxhall Rd and Hatton Garden junction and it has been lime green and purple depending on which charity or organisation rent it.

One, located as described above, moved from outside Joseph Lamp prior to the demolition of that site. There are hundreds of little replicas though in the 08 and gift shops etc...

Hope Students at Everton hard at work

Go Superlambananas!

Artists from all over the region are being invited to submit designs for quite possibly the most quirky and vibrant event being held throughout Capital of Culture year.

With 2008 fast approaching, Go Superlambananas is also possibly the most ambitious and all encompassing project to yet to be announced and the organisers are calling for contributions from Birkenhead to Bootle.

Running from June to September, Wild In Art, together with Liverpool Hope University and the City Council, are asking for local artists to become involved in placing over 100 highly decorated versions of the iconic statue in Liverpool, to form a trail through the city streets and boroughs as a demonstration of the region’s artistic talent and bursaries will be available for designing and creating the army of Superlambananas.

Statues will form a trail through city streets

‘We wanted to come up with something in which people could use their imaginations, reflect the culture of the area and its sense of fun. Using this fabulous icon created by Japanese artist Taro Chiezo as a canvas is a great way of doing all that,’ said Charlie Langhorne of Wild In Art and organiser of Manchester’s memorable Cow Parade.

‘We want all forms of art involved, not just traditional paintings, whether professional or amateur, and across the spectrum. Poets, photographers, authors, new media … the whole lot, but using whatever they think will work on a three-dimensional canvas. We really want to reflect the area’s culture, vitality and humour. Let’s get these things flying, dancing and singing. It’s a really exciting project and has already caught people’s imagination.’

Professor Bill Chambers of Liverpool Hope Cornerstone Campus in Everton said: ‘My aim is to show just how exciting, inventive and colourful Liverpool can be and this is the perfect project for us to show those things.
Everybody knows what the Superlambanana is and where it comes from, so what we want to do is take the project to local schools and get them involved as well, prior The Big Hope Youth Conference taking place from June 4 to June 11, next year.

The deadline for designs to be submitted is mid-February, so there is plenty of time for artists to get their thinking caps on and to make this one of the most memorable events of Capital of Culture year.’

For more information visit the Wild In Art website.

Not that old chestnut again. Can you imagine how dull the city would be if you never spent any money on non essential things? Why not melt down all the Beatles statues and sell the metal to pay for a teacher or nurse.

Sorry JohnZ, I agree with Rodders.

We need quirky/arty things just as much as anything else. Think about all the marvellous statues and pieces of art in cities across the world. There are some stunning things to see, serious things, funny things, thought provoking things, - it's what makes a place interesting and not bland.

Superlambananas back to their spiritual home
Apr 17 2008
by Ben Turner, Liverpool Echo

http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/article/11162100/2008/04/16/12135535.jpeg

A FLOCK of mini-Superlambananas have found shelter in their spiritual home.

A trail of the colourful pieces of art will adorn Liverpool and surrounding areas on June 16 for the Go Superlambananas! event.

Organiser Wild In Art has found the ideal place to store the figures ahead of their big day - the Matchworks, in Garston, where the original Superlambanana was created in 1998.

The arts group has taken 5,500 sq ft of space in a deal with developer Urban Splash.

The venue will be used as a studio for artists and community groups, who have been commissioned to apply their own designs to the mini-Superlambananas.

Project director Sally Ann Wilkinson said: “Given this was the birthplace of Superlambanana, I cannot think of a more fitting place for us.”
