View Full Version : Liverpool v Athletic Bilbao
Here's some nostalgia for Marie.
In 1968-69 Liverpool and Athletic Bilbao played each other in the 1st round of thre Fairs Cup, the forerunner of the UEFA Cup. Both legs were 2-1 for the home side, meaning the tie had to be settled by the toss of a coin at Anfield, which Athletic won. The programme for the Anfield game describes Athletic as one of the oldest clubs in Spain packed with internationals, and thanks them for their hospitality in the 1st leg.
In 1983-4 the sides were paired in the 2nd round of the European Cup, in the days before seedings. Joe Fagan said in his programme notes that Athletic was the team Liverpool didnt want. A dull 0-0 draw at Anfield was followed by Liverpool soaking up Athletic pressure in the San Mames, before striking a killer blow in the 66th minute through an Ian Rush header. At the end of this game the Reds were applauded off the field by the home fans.

Thanks Marie, I have just noticed that the 1968 programme refers to "Atletico Bilbao" not Athletic. Did the name change to the English version between 1968 and 1984 or did Liverpool make a mistake.

The real name is Athletic Club. Bilbao Athletico itīs the second team, in the second division. But in Spain, somes people, mistake it too.
scouserdave 04-13-2007, 12:19 AM Ste, I was at that game as well and I also have a proey to prove it! I think mine has the name of the scorers written on the front. I'll dig it out in the morning. Haven't a clue where it is until I ask the missus (fast asleep on the couch). I've got tons of 1960s programmes. They were in my Mum and Dad's house until 2005.

He is not hated for that he has left. They were for the forms. For example, we all would like that Xabi Alonso was in Bilbao, but they are satisfied of that he is in the Liverpool, for which it is better for his career. He has very much level to be in Bilbao. They all recognize it, and they all are glad about his current situation. Mikel Arteta, had a few bad forms here, that forget nobody.

No, I didn't know that.
Arteta's teammate, Andy Johnson is a well known actress/ballet dancer in the UK. His Dying Swan routine is amazing!:unibrow:

I was at that game too. I always remember that we were losing 2-3 on aggregate and were laying siege to the Kop goal when Crazy Horse scored a cracker in the dying minutes to level things up.
I am still gutted to this day that they went to a toss of a coin to decide without even playing extra time.

One of the reasons he came to Everton was because Xabi Alonso and the Spanish players were living in the city and playing for Liverpool. Playing for Everton wasnt the primary thing that brought him here.
