CONFIDENCE among Liverpool businesses is rising, a new report reveals today.

And 53% of city firms believe turnover will rise in the next three months, while 46% expect profitability to improve.

The report also claims a 10% rise in employment within the city, with 66% of new jobs being full time or permanent, building on a similar trend in the manufacturing and service sector the previous quarter.

Chamber chief executive Jack Stopforth said: "It's excellent news that Liverpool businesses are enjoying increased sales at a time when the trend is towards reduced consumer confidence."

Further good news came from government data that reveals the number of start-up businesses in Liverpool continues to outstrip national and regional rates, with 950 opening up in the past year.

The overall Merseyside figure showed 26,070 VAT regis-tered firms at the start of this year, an increase of 0.8% since 2004 and up by 12.2% since 1997 compared with UK and north west growth rates of 0.1% and 0.4%, respectively.
