View Full Version : Liverpool Mosaics
scouserdave 04-12-2007, 02:40 PM Ged's 85 Dale Street post got me thinking about having a thread dedicated to the mosaics found around Liverpool. I don't know about you, but I must have taken loads of shots without realising there was a mosaic in the picture.
Here's a few I took in Castle Street. All created by Frank Murray (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/speel/place/lpoolth.htm) in 1889.

Brilliant those Dave. Some great art work there and captured perfectly. Apparently there was a mosaic scene above the head of Queen Victoria at her monument that has been taken down. The last I heard it was being sought for restoration and reinstallment.

Anywho...The moasic of the angel on the grave is beautiful, I love how it looks like the angel is watching down.
Does anyone know if the mosaic on the queen vic monument is a rumor? If not we should campaign for it to be restored where it belongs as I would love to see it!
MissDeamenour. Una McCauley is a good woman. I wish you all the success, in fact i'm attending the final night (for the party you see) at Southport on 19th May. There is a page somewhere on the Scottie press where the Queen Victoria Monument mosaic is reported as fact by the Tremarco family whom I think worked on it originally.
ChrisGeorge 04-12-2007, 04:08 PM Hi Dave et al.
The Scottie Press site on Liverpool's Little Italy discusses how many of the mosaics in the city were done by Italian immigrant craftsmen or done by Italian craftsmen in Italy and imported into England. See
http://www.scottiepress.org/projects/litaly.htm
As you can see, the imposing mosaic that you photographed on the former British and Foreign Marine Insurance Company Building was done by Antonio Salviati (1816-1890), who founded his “laboratory of mosaic art” in Venice in 1859. See also http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/art/artifact/Other_39_00001.htm and http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mosaics+Salviati

ChrisGeorge 04-12-2007, 04:24 PM Hi Dave
I am trying to reconcile what is said on the Scottie Press site about Salviati being responsible for the mosaic at the former British and Foreign Marine Insurance Company Building and what is said on the link you provided, that Frank Murray was responsible and signed it in 1889. Hmmmm.... Could Salviati have provided the glass used in the mosaic and the actual design be Murray's? I'm not sure.
Chris
scouserdave 04-12-2007, 04:33 PM Thanks for the info Chris. By the way, Ron from Scottie Press emailed me just a few minutes ago to tell me that his website is being reviewed by Lark Lane's (http://www.larklane.com/) Andrew Macaulay on Radio Merseyside at 17:50 this evening, so listen out for it folks:PDT_Piratz_26:

My god! you will actually meet me then! Argh! Now I am nervous. And yes, Una is a great woman, she has done alot for me, especially in the singing department (she gave me alot of solos alongside professional singers). She is a little annoyed I'm not singing in the opera but building props instead :S
They should deffinately find a way to restore the mosaic before 08, i think it would be fantastic as it would show some of the italian culture and heritage in our city but in an easy to find and see place (as some of the other beautiful mosaics are a little hard to find).
Did you get Johnny Kennedy's autograph, or maybe he got yours lol.

Correct, sir!
It was built as the Swan Cinema and opened in 1917.
The building was demolished in 1996, but the mosaic floor in the foyer survived, but it's suffering from being left exposed to whatever happens to it.

PhilipG 02-25-2008, 09:26 PM This had been a pub in Victorian days, and it was finally listed in the 1908 edition of Gore's directory.
The only way to find out the name was to check the large scale 1890 edition of the Ordnance Survey map.
Not surprisingly, perhaps, it was called the Bridewell Vaults.
From 1910 Gore's lists the occupants as S McCain & Sons, provision merchants, and this shop front almost certainly dates from that time.
McCains had the premises until 1962, by which time they were described as egg merchants.
It appears to have been unoccupied at least until the end of the 1960s (when street directories ceased to be published).
It was occupied until a couple of years ago as offices, (estate agents, solicitors, or something like that).

They've got that book in the Clearance Book Centre, so I thought I'd see what the author had to say about 31 Cheapside, seeing as how it's been chosen for the cover.
"There's an interesting shop front in Cheapside, opposite the Bridewell."

PhilipG 03-06-2008, 12:27 AM There's a story behind that Hatfield Hotel.
A pub was built next to Sefton Park station and they applied for a licence.
In fact, they applied for a licence 12 times, and each time it was refused, so that is a case of a pub being built which has never served any ale!

haven't been around town much looking for them as I've been concentrating on suburbs. nice to know they still exist in the city centre considering all the rebuilding going on.
there used to be a Liptons one at the Lawrence Rd (Wavertree) Liptons/Maypole (now there's a blast from the past). Shop is vacant now, but the mosaic was either damaged or removed in the 90's as far as I know.

I've got the tile picture ones so I can put them up. I didn't post them as I thought tiles too big to be a proper mosaic. I think there's 1 in the walkthrough to Old Hall St, there's also ethnic groups represented in glass cases. didn't have camera with me when I last went through there 3 weeks ago.

I'll show him these pics.
Thanks Quincy.
Speaking of mosaics, what ever happened to the mosaic of the waterfront that was situated at the rear of the mersey tunnel entrance at the apex of Manchester St and Dale St? It was about four foot in diameter and about three foot high. it showed a section of the river with Liverpool and Birkenhead.
