Mr Sinnott does not want to see
drinks adverts on sports shirts

Steve Sinnott of the National Union of Teachers said the impact on the young was stark.

Government figures showed a fifth of all students excluded from school were excluded for drinking.

"This exposure to alcohol is damaging young people's lives and futures," he told his union's annual conference.

Mr Sinnott - who is from Liverpool - described the possible experience of a young football fan going to a Liverpool-Everton match.

It is a Carling cup match, with a Carlsberg logo on the Everton shirts and Chang beer on Liverpool's.

A scoring striker indicates that his celebrations that night will involve "more than a social drink".

The man of the match is awarded a bottle of champagne.

"The effects on the young are stark," Mr Sinnott said.

"I call today for radical action by the drinks industry and others. The association between alcohol and sport must end.

"The sponsorship of sport by the drinks industry must end in advance of the Olympics in 2012."

When Liverpool have played in France they have had to play in sponsorless shirts due to a ban on alcohol advertising there. Imay be mistaken, but I'm sure a Danish mate of mine once told me in Denmark shirts in kids sizes come without logos on too as kids shouldnt be advertising alcohol. Liverpool's youth teams dont display the sponsors either.

I saw Sinnott getting interviewed on telly yesterday, saying how schools should do more for "Black Caribbean boys", because they underachieve. My lads know loads of black boys, but none of them come from the Caribbean. Man isn't fit to lead the N.U.T.

Teachers union leader Steve Sinnott dies
Apr 5 2008

THE LIVERPOOL-BORN leader of Britain's biggest teaching union has died.

Steve Sinnott, the general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, died early on Saturday morning.

It is not yet known how he died.

In a statement, a spokeswoman said his death early on Saturday was a "tragic loss".

Mr Sinnott had been the union's general secretary since 2004 after

The NUT spokeswoman said: "This is a tragic loss to both his family and the NUT."

Mr Sinnott, who was married with two children, was 53 when he took on the role of general secretary in June 2004. He had been a member of the union since 1974.

His death comes just days after he spoke about a teachers' strike planned for April 24 in a campaign to stop the Government imposing real-terms pay "cuts" on teachers.

Ed Balls, secretary of state for Children, Schools and Families, paid tribute to Mr Sinnott.

He said: "I am deeply shocked and saddened at the news of Steve's tragic and untimely death. Our thoughts are with Steve's family and friends at this very difficult time.

"Steve was a passionate advocate for teachers and a great believer in the power of education to transform the life chances of children and young people. I know from our many meetings and phone calls that he believed strongly that every child matters and deserves the best."

Mr Sinnott graduated from Middlesex Polytechnic in 1974 with a degree in social sciences, and a PGCE at Edge Hill College in Ormskirk in 1975.

In 1975 he began his first teaching post at Shorefields High in Toxteth, Liverpool, where he taught humanities.

Four years later, he moved to Broughton High School near Preston, where he became head of economics and business studies until his election as NUT deputy general in November 1994.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC said: "Steve's death comes as a great shock. He was a friend and a colleague who was deeply committed to the best of trade unionism and the British education system.

"Teachers, parents and students have lost a doughty fighter."

Mr Sinnott leaves a wife, Mary, two children and two grandchildren.

EXCLUSIVE Bid to ban booze adverts in war on teen binge drinking
By Jason Beattie Deputy Political Editor 6/05/2008

Booze adverts could be banned at sports events in a new front in the war on teenage binge drinking.

The commercials must be as intolerable as those for tobacco, says a Labour MP.

Doctors are backing the plan, which is being considered by ministers at the Culture, Media and Sport department.

It would stop big firms such as Carling and Carlsberg sponsoring the league and football teams including Everton (Chang Beer) Liverpool (Carlsberg) and rugby and cricket clubs (Magners cider and Marston's beer).

In an article for the Fabian Society think tank, MP Dr Howard Stoate said: "Advertising rules say alcohol products shouldn't be marketed to under 18s.

"It shouldn't be allowed anywhere near live sports events or sport on TV.

"We allow leading football teams and players, with their millions of young fans, to be sponsored by drinks firms. How can that possibly be right?"

He said the crackdown was essential in the face of a big rise in teenage drinking. It has doubled among 11 to 15-year-olds in England since 1990, with some as young as 13 regularly admitted to hospital for booze problems.

Dr Stoate added: "With alcohol-related accidents and ill health among young people on the rise, the time has come to clamp down on the way the alcohol industry is using professional sport to boost its profile and sales among the young.

"A complete ban on alcohol advertising in sport is surely the only way forward."

Research by the Fabian Society found 42 per cent of people were concerned about teenage drinking. Among 18-34 year-olds, 28 per cent thought they drank too much.

The British Medical Association's Dr Viv Nathanson said doctors were "very concerned" about the impact of the ads at sports events. She added: "If the evidence showed there was a strong link between sponsorship and young people's drinking we would be looking for a ban."

But David Poley, head of drinks industry body the Portman Group, said: "There are strict controls to protect the public from irresponsible advertising and sponsorship.

"It would do nothing to tackle harmful drinking."

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport said: "Alcohol companies should take a responsible approach.

"But their sponsorship is worth many millions which in many cases is used to support youth and grassroots development programmes."

I've never understood advertising. If I want to go out and buy something, it's because I want to, not because there is a great advert.

Looking at an advert doesn't make me want to rush out and drink myself silly.

Next, the word 'beer' will be banned!

to an extent i do aggree with you regarding buying gear, I do understand advertising though as I'm a minority ( happy bloke who wants for nothing ), I do know many impulse buyers and they appear to be mostly women, wife mother sister etc....not saying that women are vulnerable to ads or men are imune but it is the trend i see

What about adult binge drinking., I drink every night of the week, I don't have a problem, I have and do stop when I like but i really do enjoy it, however i'm not a binge drinker, I think binge drinking is a massive problem in my country as a lot of crimes are caused by binge drinkers, is this a problem in the UK too?
we have an ad on tv which shows the crap some binge drinkers get into and the slogan is " its not the drinking its how we're drinking "
