A Liverpool based publisher is looking for new writers to contribute to a series of books to celebrate the city's 800th birthday.

Mersey Minis is a five volume anthology of accumulated writings about Liverpool which will be published throughout 2007. The series is made up of Liverpool-specific writing, with each volume based around a specific theme: Landing, Living, Loving, Leaving and Longing.

The first four volumes in the series are anthologies of accumulated writing from a variety of sources – from Dickens to Defoe, Tracey Emin to Will Self. The writings span the last 800 years – from the year when Liverpool first received its charter from King John.

The fifth volume, based around the theme of ‘Longing’, will be made up of new writing which will be selected from submissions made in a competition launched by the publisher, Capsica. continues (http://www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool/content/articles/2007/03/26/merseyminis_feature.shtml).....

Yesterday was the deadline to submit to Volume 5, "Longing" of the Mersey Minis series, and, as Ged Fleming knows, I have submitted two short prose pieces for consideration for the competition, and hopefully publication in the new volume ... so we will see how I do! I did buy Volume 1 of the series, "Landing" when I was in W. H. Smith's on Church Street last month and highly recommend it. It is packed with impressions of Liverpool by writers both famous and not so famous. For more information see http://www.loveliverpoolbooks.com/

Hi all

I am pleased to say that I along with Yoko Ono Lennon and poet Roger McGough, and local writers such as Dave Calder and Gladys Mary Coles will have works published in "Longing," Volume 3 of the Mersey Minis series of books about Liverpool and to be given out for free as a present to the people of Liverpool on the city's 800th birthday, Tuesday, August 28. The launch of the book is to be at St. Nicholas's churchyard on that day.

In Liverpool city centre, you can find your book here:

08 Place, Whitechapel

BBC Radio Merseyside, Hanover Street

Bluecoat Display Centre 2, Hanover Street

60 Hope Street (restaurant)

Utility, Bold Street

The Italian Club, Bold Street

News from Nowhere, Bold Street

Walker Gallery, William Brown Street

Conservation Centre, Whitechapel

Maritime Museum, Albert Dock

Tate Gallery, Albert Dock

And, as they say, all good bookshops (the organizers say they'll confirm which have definitely agreed to give Vol 3 out)

A complete list of writers included in "Longing" can be found at http://merseyminis3.blogspot.com/2007/08/competition-winners.html

For more on the complete series of books go to http://www.merseyminis.com/
