Pity they didn't use the original gas lamps....those are a poor representation with a modern twist.

Might be an older car in the old pic, but the "wigwam" wasn't completed until 1967 - so the pic is mid to late 60's. It doesn't look like any blue plastic is on the stainless roof in the BW pic...

Notice how us poor pedestrians have lost a lot of pavement to make a lay by for the motorists. The car looks like an Austin A7O. I took this on my lunch time ramble around the area.

Thanks - very interesting - I remember the A90 Westminister version, but don't remember the A90 Atlantic version, which looks quite different.

Was the Atlantic version much less common?

Bernie

Hi Az,The A90 Atlantic was built for the American market but was available to order in the UK. I seem to remember it held an endurance record at the Brickyard for many years. It wasn't really a success over here.

Thanks, that explains it... they were all gone here by the time I came to the US....:)

Because they were both "A90" models, was the only major difference the body?

Bernie
10-07-2010, 06:42 PM
I think they came out soon after WW2, they had a 4 cylinder engine, the later Westminster had a 6 cylinder. The Atlantic was available as a 2 door coupe and as a convertible. I saw one on Ebay a while ago and it made over $50k. It wasn't original the engine had been changed for a later Austin Healey 100/4 unit. The Atlantic coupe had an electric back window, supposedly for extra ventilation, being a flier you probably know the aerodynamics of the car and know it would suck in exhaust fumes. Very interesting car though.

Our Austin A70 which we used on camera trips to Wales and the Lakes. I don`t know anything about cars but I know it was under powered because with 4 of us in it we had to reverse up the hills because it couldn`t climb in foward gear.

You will be praising the brakes too then, as the car-full will have had to roll down the hills as well. :)

I wonder if the locals greeted you with, "Hello again" as you backed into view? :)

I can see why you take such excellent pictures Joe, a life times experience.

Well me being a kid at the time...I don't remember me old fella struggling to get the Ford Popular up the welsh moutain roads, every weekend we went and camped through Wales and Caernarfon countryside.

Things I remember....sheep sticking thier heads in the tent late at night...baaaa,baaaa.
Fireflys on the outsideof the tent.

IF IT WASN'T FOR THE 'OUSES IN BETWEEN
(Edgar Bateman / George LeBrunn)

Gus Elen - 1899

If you saw my little backyard
"Wot a pretty spot", you'd cry
It's a picture on a sunny summer day
Wiv the turnip tops and cabbages
Wot people doesn't buy
I makes it on a Sunday look all gay

The neighbours finks I grow 'em,
And you'd fancy you're in Kent
Or at Epsom if you gaze into the mews
It's a wonder as the landlord
Doesn't want to raise the rent
Because we have such nobby distant views

Oh! it really is a wery pretty garden
And Chingford to the Eastward could be seen
Wiv a ladder and some glasses
You could see to 'Ackney Marshes
If it wasn't for the 'ouses in between

We're as countrified as can be
Wiv a clothes prop for a tree
The tub-stool makes a rustic little stile
Ev'ry time the blooming clock strikes
There's a cuckoo sings to me
And I've painted up "To Leather Lane A Mile"

Wiv tomatoes and wiv radishes
Wot 'adn't any sale
The backyard looks a purfick mass o' bloom
And I've made a little beehive
Wiv some beetles in a pail
And a pitchfork wiv the 'andle of a broom

Oh! it really is a wery pretty garden
And Rye 'Ouse from the cock-loft could be seen
Where the chickweed man undresses
To bathe 'mong the water cresses
If it wasn't for the 'ouses in between

There's the bunny shares his egg box
Wiv the cross-eyed cock and hen
Though they 'as got the pip and him the 'morf
In a dog's 'ouse on the line-post
There was pigeons, nine or ten
Till someone took a brick and knocked it off

The dust cart though it seldom comes
Is just like 'Arvest 'Ome
And we made to rig a dairy up some'ow
Put the donkey in the wash'ouse
Wiv some imitation 'orns,
For we're teaching im to moo just like a kah

Oh! it really is a wery pretty garden
And 'Endon to the westward could be seen
And by clinging to the chimbley
You could see across to Wembley
If it wasn't for the 'ouses in between

Though the gasworks is at Woolwich
They improve the rural scene
For mountains they would very nicely pass
There's the mushrooms in the dust-hole
With the cowumbers so green
It only wants a bit 'o 'ot 'ouse glass

I wears this milkman's nightshirt
And I sits outside all day
Like the ploughboy cove what's mizzled o'er the Lea
And when I goes indoors at night
They dunno what I say
'Cause my language gets as yokel as can be

Oh! it really is a wery pretty garden
And soapworks from the 'ousetops could be seen
If I got a rope and pulley
I'd enjoy the breeze more fully
If it wasn't for the 'ouses in between

Yes fine photo, Joe. Though the dilapidated look of the building with the missing letters which I would guess used to spell "Kirkby Swimming Pool" is anything other than "Nice" as stated on the construction hoarding.

Oh how beautiful, and how familiar. When I lived in Treborth Street I went to the park most days. As it was literally round the corner we treated it as our garden!! Walked through Princess Park and Sefton Park. Actually, the other house I grew up in was only ten minutes or less further away!!!!!

And now I live round the corner from Central Park, it is my destiny!!

Lindy, that pic is ok. Does ur camera have a firework mode, you could try that on it's fastest time at night. See if that helps

I got one of those Gorrillapod tripods, wise choice. Pricey at the time but very practical!
