Sloyne 04-05-2007, 03:16 PM The most unusual ad I remember was the one for Manns Brown Ale. The billboards adds didn't last to long and you will understand why. The ad depicted a party situation with a number of people drinking Manns Brown Ale and the slogan read;
"Enjoy a Manns Brown and widen the circle of your friends". These adds appeared in the early sixties.:)
Was there one on the Lisbon?

With the weather holding up I think it may be a weekend of walking around with the camera
shytalk 04-13-2007, 07:30 PM When I was a kid I used to go to the Woolton Cinema for Saturday kids matinée, at the bottom of the street there was an EWS, last time i was around there it was a car park.

Shy, it could only be that one corner, as all the rest of Mason Street, except the cinema, are really old houses.
theninesisters 04-13-2007, 08:05 PM That house on the corner of Mason Street still stands - it was once owned by a previous Tower Captain (in charge of the bells) at St Peter's Woolton - as soon as the grey matter releases his name I'll post it!

PhilipG 02-29-2008, 10:56 AM Hi Quincyg.
I'm loving all your photos.
Lots I've never seen.
The Wilkinsons one is on a building that was a very short lived cinema, and even one of the places where Billy Fury may have appeared!
This is the building, in Prescot Road.
You can make out 'Stanley Billiard Hall', but if you look even closer, it also says 'Stanley Picturedrome'.
It was built as a billiard hall, was a cinema from 1910 to 1915, then reverted to a billiard hall (after the New Premier opened).
It was later the Embassy night club where, in December 1968, it was announced that Billy Fury would appear.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find out whether he actually did!

PhilipG 03-12-2008, 12:13 PM Lovely, Quincyg.
A new Salvation Army Hall was never built on that site.
The London Road one is a beauty (Mother Noblett's Everton Toffee), but is fading away.
The whole front should be restored and then coated with something to protect it.
Sometimes, you can only see things once you've zoomed in.
This is in Seaforth Road, and is a mystery.

Its on a building row that is diagonal to the Bill Shankly playing fields. Think that my be Eaton Road.
I don#t go that way often now but when I next do I'll take a pic, but it'll only be on a camera phone

Hello quincy
I am wondering where you found this as it is most interesting. The two long curving objects shown on the sign for the "Jaw Bone Tavern 1802" are actually whales' jawbones, as can be seen from the images in a Google search (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=whales+jawbones&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi), so I would infer that the tavern stands or stood somewhere near the docks. Am I right? Possibly whalers used to frequent the tavern.
Chris
One of my weekend haunts this Chris. In Litherland Road, Bootle - Merton Road end - not a million miles from the docks but wouldn't liike to walk it if gasping for a pint :PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Locally known as Bootle village - a few pubs in the general locality.

Thanks, Ged. I suppose the actual tavern has gone and the datestone was just incorporated into a later building, is that right?
Chris
I would imagine so looking at that brickwork.

It's 75 Seaforth Road, on the corner of Seaforth Vale West, and its probably always been a shop.
I found a site for Seaforth this morning, and nobody there knows what it's all about, but somebody pointed out that that terrace was built soon after 1881.

My dad who was in the Royal Navy during the war had a pair of shaking hands like that as a tattoo on his arm, and an anchor on the other arm. He called it 'hands across the sea' (or that was the official title of it, I don't know) in commemoration of the U.S.A. being our allies.

Mind you, if they're still in business, they would say "Why not?".

Derby Sq. been past there loads of times but there's usually people stood along the wall as it's near a bus stop. probably why I'd not noticed it before.
marky 05-01-2008, 11:26 PM CO-OP Bedford Road. This tiled advert would look great if someone removed the white paint. There is also a CO-OP mosaic floor a few feet to the right of this old advert. I haven't photographed it yet, as I've only seen the side-door open once (and didn't get a pic).
