Dr Jonathan Foyle, architectural historian and novice climber, scales Britain's most iconic structures, from the Normans to the present day, to reveal the buildings' secrets and tell the story of how our architecture and construction has developed over 1000 years.

The next step of Jonathan Foyle's journey takes him to the Liver Building in Liverpool. Built from 1908, this behemoth in concrete was Britain's first skyscraper that influenced buildings all over the world.

On his climbs Jonathan, aided by top climber Lucy Creamer, scales over 250 feet to reveal how this granite building isn't quite what it seems and investigates how a concrete boat paved the way for this immense skyscraper. He climbs up a disused lift shaft to literally get under the skin of this groundbreaking construction; comes face to face with the biggest clock in Britain; and tests the limits of his courage to traverse over a sheer drop of over two hundred feet to get up close and personal with a couple of beautiful birds.

That was a good programme, and gave an interesting background to the wealth of the city at the time. It was surprising to learn that originally there wasn't any interest in the plot of land, and the only small criticism I'd make is that it could have done with a 10 sec explanation at that point explaining that it, and the Cunard and PoL Buildings, was built on the redundant and drained George's Dock.
Obviously filmed recently as The World was on the Cruise Terminal, and they must have had a break in filming which led to the mysterious disappearing Mannanan :)

It was good TV for the city, and I learnt a few more things about the Liver Building that I didn't know before.

I'm amazed he didn't comment on being able to see Captain America fighting it out at Stanley Dock - he could've seen all the action from his perch beneath the Liver Bird. Probably filmed before they set up set there?
