View Full Version : Liverpool 'worst for mobile phone thefts'
Shapers 04-02-2007, 09:03 PM Liverpool is the worst city in England for mobile phone thefts, a new study has claimed.
Research carried out for insurance firm CPP Phonesafe found 29% of people questioned in the city had been a victim of the crime.
Throughout the UK, the survey of 3,500 people found that Liverpool was the third worst place for mobile theft, with Glasgow (31%) and Belfast (29%) taking first and second place.
Some 12% of people questioned in Liverpool said they had not insured their handsets.
CPP, a life assistance firm offering insurance for mobile phones, said the study showed that everyone needed to be more vigilant with their phones.
John Walkley, head of mobile phone security at CPP Phonesafe, said: “It’s alarming how common mobile theft is becoming.”

Problem is a lot of people ask for it, walking round with a phone stuck
to their ear. Be interested in seeing figures which show the percentage
of thefts from what I say above compared to those who keep the phone
out of view, bit like the glut of Stcky On Sat Navs, people take them off put them in glove box but either leave the bracket on the windscreen or the mark
left by the sucker

I think you saying there asking for it is harsh, people have the right to use there phones, ipods, etc and should not fear being attacked or robbed by jealous filth.
I know its advisable to conceal them, but the moral question should always be, why should they have to?

Because that's the way of the world. If it isn't nailed down, someone will take it - that's happened from day one and will always happen whether you're the duke or the dustman.
However I agree with people flashing their mobiles around - they are asking for trouble. I've always had the top of the range mobile and I've never lost it or had it pinched. It's always on vibrate in my pocket when I'm out and about and never flash it anywhere in public.

Sensible fellow, not a flasher then ?, :-). Like me I have an expensive phone
which like you I have on vibrate, and if it goes, I check as soon as I can
and call them back...
Shapers 04-02-2007, 09:50 PM Its like any crime, why should you have to padlock your bike in your own backyard, make sure your cars steering locks on, nail your wallet to your bum (painful but effective).

Unfortunately, that is society today.

Where is London in the 'study'?
lindylou 04-03-2007, 10:36 AM people with mobile phones get up my nose anyway ! :unibrow:
.. bawling and shouting into them everywhere they go.
remember ages ago I posted about someone bellowing down the phone in a card shop .. I was TRYING to choose a carefully worded card and couldn't read the verses in bladdy peace 'cos this dingbat standing right next to me was reading out cards to the person at the other end of the phone - -
- well, a similar thing happened in Breck rd library the other week ... some loud mouth was bellowing all her business for all to hear - the library was full with people trying to study or use the computers - the loud mouth was asked to leave.
of course, she didn't go without objecting.
She had a some kids with her too .. not a good example is it. :disgust:
I know someone who, though he doesn't use a mobile phone at all as it's all a bit complicated for him, still has it on vibrate in his front pocket all the same.
By the way, good morning Gerard, where are you?
snappel 04-03-2007, 11:40 AM I wish more mobile phones would get stolen. I'm fed up of getting stuck behind people on stairs and in shop doorways who are engrosed in some pointless text message conversation. Worse still are the boring people at work who go on and on and on and on about their mobile phone handset/tarif, and it drives me mad.
I have a beaten-up old Nokia that lets me make and receive calls. My total bills each month are usually around £15. I just don't see how people can justify a £300 handset and £50 monthly bills.
And while I'm at it, I really hate those stupid ringtones. It's so rude, I think, to have a phone that blasts out 50 Cent at a ridiculous volume just to tell you somebodies phoning you. How about a subtle tone?
In short, I hate the way mobile phones are used as fashion accessories, and far more importance is attached to them than is necessary. Not that it justifies the crime or anything, just felt like venting about 'mobiles'...

I agree with you. I also have an old Nokia, nothing fancy but it works, also
have an all singing all dancing bluetooth camera phone, with polyphonic
ring tones, Axel F by Crazy Frog, great poser with the bluetooth thing stuck
in the ear, point is, it dosn't work any better than my old Nokia yet cost
8 times the price. I just stick the old Nokia in my pocket on vibrate and if
it goes, when I have chance I ring whoever back
I did have a Blackberry but didn't like it so gave it to a frend
Michael Crawford had a black beret too.
steveb 04-03-2007, 01:00 PM Michael Crawford had a black beret too.
ermmmm, yes he did, like to see him send email via it though :handclap:
I think it was telex machines and pigeon post back then :unibrow:

Where is London in the 'study'?
Maybe its been doen by local authority area, which is always a good way of ensuring London doesnt get a high ranking in nastiness due to the number of boroughs there.
Kirst 04-04-2007, 11:35 AM Liverpools bad, but Glasgow jeez, rough there haha.
