I went to Anfeld Cem today to see if anything was happening
at the memorial for the 545 killed in the blitz, nowt

Hi Steve, the actual number of those killed in Liverpool was 2736 according to my sources. True St Luke's Church is also a memorial and there is Tom Murphy's memorial in the grounds of St Nicholas's Church - but it would be good to have some ceremony in recognition of the sacrifices made during the War.

yes these are just the ones buried in the communal grave at anfield
must admit the memorial is starting to look a bit rough even though
the lettering was redone last year. The origional idea was for on the
front of the mem to have the tyson smith liverpool coat of arms, that
is there, but the coat of arms on the left is missing as are the names
of the know dead which should be on the stonework of the long grave

I wondered if there was any definitive account, of the number of casualties involved,as tonight,on an episode of "Coast", it was stated that Hull,was the most heavily bombed city,outside of London?...and here's me thinking it was Bootle!! (This was suppressed,at the time,apparently,but no recognition has ever been given,since!)

I was surprised at how much damage there was in the actual city center. The old National Archives photos referenced on another thread show this -

I guess the major stuff was cleaned out and repaired/rebuilt/replaced fairly quickly after the war - just about when I was born.

Especially further to the right of pic'1,where the customs house,etc,was!The customs house,though burnt out,was still standing,so what did they do?...demolish it!

I take your point, but to be fair, Radio 4 did hand over the baton to Peter Sissons the other day, who presented a programme specifically on the Liverpool blitz. The point was made that, because of media censorship, the events in Liverpool were seriously under-represented. Only a 15-minute programme, but worth catching.

Based on the secret diary of Arthur Johnson, wartime archivist for the Post & Echo, Peter Sissons describes how the effects on the city were played down in the national news coverage at the time and how as a result even now many of the events are not given due recognition. Includes interviews with eye-witnesses. Available for only TWO more days only( I hate the way iPlayer progs self-destruct like this - anyone know a technical way around this?)

not as such as a lot of them were not identified.
If you have a relative who died during the blitz
all you can do is search using ancestory or similar

I have details of all those who died in the Blitz on both sides of the Mersey, as part of the Collateral exhibition in May/June (and again next year) we offered to respond to queries about areas/names etc If anyone has any questions I'll do my best to help you out.
