It's not one of mine, but I want to share it.
IMHO I consider it one of the best photos of Liverpool of all time.

I remember vaguely when the North Western Hotel in Lime st was a cafe/bar and my dad would call into John Menzies in the station to get his month encyclopedia suppliment, I ssume it would be around 1973 ish then he would take me into the cafe and he'd have a pint and get me a carton of orange and I remember looking at the blue neon Embassy cigarette sign that would go out then illuminate in sections from one side to the other until fully lit then go back out again and continually repeat but I can't picture where the sign would have been because the new St. John's would have been built by then, I wonder if it was somewhere opposite by Concourse house but then would I have seen it from the station windows - probably not - Help!

Hi Philip

Great photograph, Philip. A reminder of a part of Liverpool that has disappeared. Our neon counterpart to Times Square in New York or Piccadilly Circus in London. Thanks for sharing this old photo with us.

There used to be a Capstan neon sign on the Crown Hotel.
Would it be possible that it was changed to Embassy?
I remember when Embassy cigs came out, about 1966 or thereabouts.
I used to smoke them.

Thanks Phil because I was thinking of the shop frontage by the punch and judy when I typed 'by concourse house' but it was higher up so it fits with The Crown that it could have been that and I might be thinking I watched it from the window but I might've just seen it en route to the station from Blacklers or Lewis's - two places my dad was never out of at the weekend (with me in tow) - bargain basement/household gadgets that you bought and only used once or never used at all.

Great Pic Phil, it is the first time I have seen it in colour. Another example of where the town planners of the 60's got it wrong.

I had trouble recognising where that was. How did they get away with knocking that down and replacing it with drab concrete? :PDT_Xtremez_42:

St John's Is a crappy looking shopping centre though.

That pic looks like the late Brian Saville's pic.

Right.

I would suggest that St. John's Precinct is probably what people think of when the comment is made "They tore the heart out of the city."

You replace a set of buildings that had some architectural distinction with something so anonymous. :(

That first picture is my wallpaper in work, at home, even on my mobile!! There is so much atmosphere to it, you can imagine being there at the time. I wish I had been alive back in the Sixties to see stuff like this, definately the decade i'd have loved to have been about in.

This truly is one of the best photos I have EVER seen, of anything! When was all this destroyed for that ugly-arse shopping centre?

Are there ANY MORE pictures like this out there?? :celb (6):

The 60's era was great :)

Liverpool was buzzing then. I can distinctly remember the feeling of excitement and anticipation. Mind you, I was growing up then, so I suppose life in general would be exciting ! :) but there was a unique feeling to that decade. Something new happening all the time; music, art, fashion, a new way to shop ie; clothing boutiques first came to L'pool, fashion really took off. Clubs were great places in those days and Liverpool was the place to be. :)

This is another plate from the Francis Frith Collection. The scene is so well known that it needs no mention but nevertheless it looks wonderful,

Great pic Brian. I have seen a b&w one of the same view but that's a good un'. The large tower behind the County Sessions House belongs to Christ Church on Hunter Street which also contained a grave yard. This stood to the rear of Gianelli's chippy.

Here are two more from the Frith collection.
The first is the Town Hall ,taken in 1895 and then Dale Street, taken in the same year.
For those of you who might be wondering about the Frith Collection and its aims let tell you what I know.
Francis Frith was a Liverpudlian ,a wholesale grocer by trade,he sold the business for an emormous sum which enabled him to travel widely. In the late 19th century he set up a photography business and began the task of making photographic records of several countries. His first major endeavour was to photograph Great Britain, a work that took him 30 years to complete. By 1890 Frith had the greatest specialist photographic publishing business in the world. I hope you enjoy the few I will post on here,
BrianD
