I think its a crying shame the way that block has been left to Degenerate and its about time our local MP's did something about it...

And when I can remember her name I will put it on here...

And dont do them up into yuppie apartments FFS...give them to locals instead of people who would normaly drive straight through this area and lock their car doors while Mobile.

Yes this lovely block should not be allowed to deteriorate more. It looks as if the developer has run out of money and work has stopped. Much the same as the Baltic Triangle development I suppose. It's not just the yuppies who have to worry about their cars as they drive through the area. I well remember the local kids chucking bricks over the fence at the rear of the block. They were trying to hit the cars on the other side, mine included !!!

Work's progressing, but on the slow side. If you look at the pics (Thanks Droney:handclap: ) and compare to a few years back, you can see a big difference. I know George Kountis who owns the development. I'll give him a bell later on and get an update from him.

Keep them Out..these are local houses and local people should get them and not some rich kid who wont mix in the area and will only step foot outside to leave the secured Car Park ..
And Louise Ellman should do her best to make sure them houses dont end up as yuppie apartments.

They were in a right state by then. Around 2001 or 2002 (this is where I'm a little usnsure with the dates), they agreed to sell to him. All the contracts were signed, but they still messed him about and he had to go through the whole of winter before the block was handed to him. During the winter, a load of slates were nicked off the roof and the water damage to the building came to tens of thousands of pounds. He demanded a refund off the Council due to them being obstructive. They didn't want to know, so to cut a long story short, it got as far as the House of Lords and the Council were ordered to compensate him.

Well that's what I was told, anyway.:eek:

I agree the houses should remain for local community use but it looks as if a private developer is doing them up. I don't know the background but I suspect this would be for the student rental market. This was their use in the 1970s certainly but the property was owned by a housing association then.

I do Blame the MP though who was representing me and my Neighborhood for letting this Block be sold to a Private Developer..
And if that was You Louise Ellman who was in Power when this went through then you are a Disgrace and should be sacked Immediately.

I think in reality families don't want to live in these walk up blocks any more and much prefer purpose built family homes such as in the Eldonian development. As such if someone was willing take a derelict listed property off the council's hands, I suspect they just jumped at the offer

I think the last 10 years should have been enough to reveal the Labour party in its true light. How anyone could have voted for the champagne socialists of New Labour is beyond me. Technically of course Louise Ellman belongs to the Co-operative Party.

Dave. I remember seeing those Eldon Grove shots of yours first time round, brilliant. That model was partly an inspiration for my one too. Hopefully it will be housed in the new museum of liverpool life when it's built.

Gerard, I don't know if Ron Formby is up to date with what's happening with these. I know the original plan was for mock tudor style houses to be built in front of them too on the old playground, to compliment the restored blocks. It seemed that the developer was waiting for the show houses to be sold on the first finished block before he had the money to restore the rest but perhaps Dave can clarify that if he speaks with his mate.

Our Joe also lived in 'ghost town' - the local name for Gt Richmond street flats as they were so quiet. It was a scandal that the council let these and other tennies go to wrack and ruin and withold healthy development of them. You can see by what has happened with the bullring with uniformity of the walls all being painted the same colour and each landing having brightly colour coded front doors how aesthetically pleasing they are to the eye - they even have coke (that's coca cola by the way) machines at ground level, mind you, the security gate and 'no children' policy also probably lends to the fact they are not now graffitied to death.

I don't think you'll ever get that energy and activity that the square generated a few decades ago with students only though, nor probably the community spirit so if these types of accommodation have to go to students or yuppies to survive, better that, and the new housing is built for families, than them being demolished altogether. If something was going to be done to keep those squares as they were, it had to be done back then, the time has lapsed now,the moment has gone - hey is that a Pink Floyd line.

I dont want them knocked down Ged..Surely something could have been done though mate to do them up and put Local people in them..
Obviously local people are not a priority...Wheres all this Local regeneration funding gone..the likes of what was supposed to go to Kensington..
Ive got family and friends up there and all they got was New doors and Windows..
Somebody somewhere has pocketed a lot of money out of all this and its Scandalous mate..

It's just like a distant ship's smoke on the horizon isn't it Gerard. Hopefully, with the building of the new Trinity school on James Clark street, the old Our Lady's site and perhaps the old Aldi site will become housing for local people to rent.

It's like all those flats being demolished around you way now. Mandy Carberry told me a while back that out of the 90 or so new houses being built there, only about 30% will be for rent so it seems it's as difficult as ever to remain in your own, old community - nothing has been learnt after shipping all the Scottie roaders out in the 1960s.

That fenced off area with the railings around it was where the we used to play in the street football competition run by the Liverpool police. The street where I lived was outside the area so I guested for Flinders or Rockingham street. It looked a lot bigger when we were kids.

FORMER labourers’ homes almost 100 years old could be converted to flats.

Eldon Grove labourers dwellings in Vauxhall’s Eldonian Village have lain derelict for years.

But they are now being marketed by Liverpool property firm Edward Symmons with planning permission for 48 flats and 50 car parking spaces.

They are owned by the city council and, despite being in the hands of a developer who cannot be named due to confidentiality reasons, Edward Symmons has been named as Law of Property Act (LVA) Receiver with instructions to sell the historic site that was given grade II-listed status in 1993.

To the front of the block is the former Bevington Street Recreation Ground which could provide scope for further development, subject to the necessary planning consents.

I picked up a link from this thread which took me to Geds inacityliving,when I got on there I clicked People and Places and entered a world that was almost Joycean. Ged has assembled an album of photographs that show people of all different sorts,the young and the old ,the carefree and the careworn,the drunk and the sober. Such a collection ;it is as good as anything I have ever seen. One face stood out above all the rest,Sandy Bromilow,he was a man who could be found down at the Pier Head on most days. There used to be a kind of speakers corner there,religious and political zealouts would come and spout their version of the truth and the passersby would stay, or go, depending on the quality of the speaker. One very left wing speaker would set up his stand and put Sandy on it ,purely as a warm up man. Sandy had cerebral palsy and his speech was difficult to understand,and when he stood on that podium he would rant away ,shouting god knows what but he never failed to pull a crowd. As soon as the audience reached a goodly size .old Stalin would move Sandy off and then get started on an even more incomprehensible rant than Sandys.
I know this is the wrong thread,but I too drink at the Eldonian when in Liverpool,thread connection right!!

When people click on the ads on the piczo, the money goes to them not u.

It depends also how u want your 'visitors' to find you. When people 'talk' and your website spreads via word of mouth then they need to be able to give the web address as simply as possible.

Was just playing with my new camera really. Seems nothing has changed, apart from some new fencing and a security guard.
