Did u ever get confused when u were a kid? I did, I used to think they were the same place:

Walton v Woolton

WALTON is going up against the likes of Woolton to prove it is the prettiest place in Liverpool.

Organisers hope the area’s floral displays could win it a coveted “in bloom” accolade in 2007.

Walton is joining the battle to be crowned North West In Bloom for the first time in its long history.

It is being backed by Liverpool council, and floral experts are hoping to transform the area with shrubbery, plants and flowers.

It is hoped the city’s latest entry will help Liverpool win the right to host the awards in Capital of Culture year.

Ron Molyneux, 76, a member of the Walton Development Trust Steering Group, said: “This is exactly what it needs – it will be like it was when I was a kid.

“We shouldn’t allow the 1% of idiots to ruin things for the 99% of people who live here.

“I want to get shops, pubs, local schools and churches all pulling together with the council to transform Walton into a bright and beautiful area.

“We should grab this chance for Walton to look good again, it’s a wonderful opportunity. People have been working very hard behind the scenes, so let us all give them the backing they deserve.”

The steering group has worked with councillors and groups including the Friends of Walton Churchyard, Friends of Walton Park, Walton Youth Project and Rice Lane Community Association to drive forward Walton in Bloom.

Young members of the In Bloom group will plant floral displays in pots and containers in Walton Village.

They also hope to plant window boxes, hanging baskets and pots along County Road and Rice Lane.

Cllr Marilyn Fielding, Liverpool’s executive member for housing and neighbourhoods, said: “Walton may be in competition with areas like Woolton Village, but it’s the city that will be the real winner.”

It depends what you mean by ghetto, Max.

It could be said that Woolton is a ghetto for the rich. :)

There is of course a district called Walton Village based around St Mary's Church.

Interestingly the church is a Celtic Church foundation dating back to the 6th C . Hence the Anglo Saxons named the village Walton ie foreigner town ie Welsh Town. The church still possess its typical Welsh "Llan" type churchyard. This is a large circular enclosure which came to mean a church in Welsh.

I have a particular interest in this churchyard as there are family ancestors buried there from the 1750s onwards. Of course it was Liverpool's parish church for nearly 500 years until about 1698.

Walton used to be a nice area until the mid 80's.

Unfortunately the Liverpool Housing Trust brought some very undesirable people into the area.

Walton is one of those Liverpool areas like Tuebrook, Wavetree, Kensington where respectable people used to have pride in their neighbourhood but in the last 20 years its declined sharply.

My part of Wavertree was nice till we got students.

We got letters through the door from a Local MP about how residents are complaining about their lack of consideration, the rise of multi occupation which Is landlords buying up the houses and them wanting normal residents to leave so students can rent em, lack of landlord responsibilty and the failure of the council and local councilors trying to resolve the problem.

I have to open our alley gate for them every Thursday because they won;t ask and the landlord won;t get a new alley gate key for them. I use to wheel their bins for them because my mum couldn't stand the mess they make with the bins!

We got takeaway rubbish all over the place, they dump bin bags In the alleys even though they know theirs such things as wheelybins, they leave the bins out at the wrong time or don't bring their own back.

They get student accommodation built for them so why don't they live In the city centre?

I've always wanted to dump someone In a bin ever since watching American programs where nerds or small people are dumped In bins.

Who wants to do this as well?:PDT_Piratz_26:

Walton has it's problems same as any other area, but it's slowly getting better. The scummy families are being evicted as landlords are slowly realising what a headache it is having to renovate a house after every tenant leaves and are selling up and having decent families moving in.
We're having the flyover area of Queens drive regenerated with the new leisure centre and and medical centre.
Hopefully,if Goodison moves the shops which only open on match days will be occupied by people who will open them when people actually need them.

Stanley park is thankfully being regenerated as is Walton park which has been happening for some time and has a large football centre.

The next thing we need is decent competition for supermarket shopping to drive out the disgusting Somerfields.

Try coming here before you voice an opinion.I noticed that Walton wasn't on your list of places you'd been and classed as "Ghettos".

WALTON has a history which pre-dates most places in Liverpool.

Now Walton’s vicar – and keen historian – Trevor Latham is calling for archaeologists to help dig back through the centuries.

Mr Latham is hoping to enlist their help to discover what lies buried beneath former tennis courts in the centre of Walton village.

“Walton was a Celtic settlement and you can see an oval outline made by Walton village and Church Road, which is surrounded by the straight lines of Victorian streets.

“The egg shape stands out like a sore thumb. My own view is there does seem to be an outline suggesting a settlement here, probably going back 2,000 years.

Exactly my views posted a few days ago. The egg shaped church yard is the typical "Llan " enclosure which have given rise to the name associated with Welsh Churches. Often these enclosures pre date the Christian era and were simply adopted as a site for the new church. In some parts of Wales Bronze age burial urns have been found in church graveyards. These bronze age peoples also planted yew trees in their burial enclosures which is why you still see them today in churchyards.

The church put on a good spread; There was a local history stall which had old postcards on show as well as a "Walton: Then and Now" book which may still be availible from the church priced at £5.25. Rice Lane Farm were there wil a few sheep and goats too. There was even a town crier fully decked out with a bell! He was having fun with the Lord Mayor from what I noticed. The Church Choir were absolutely amazing.

It was really amazing; I hope some of you guys were also able to get there. It showed that people do still take pride in Walton, They are proud of their surroundings and they will make sure that it remains that way.

Well done to the people of Walton!

Well, if you saw a lad with a Primark bag, it was I!

I was in the church whilst the Choir was on; was rather hoping the Lord Mayor would say a few words but never mind.

As I say, I had walked from Oakfield Road via Ince Ave and so it was quite a nice suprise to see something going on in Walton. I was getting the impression that the city was rather quiet this morning; Kensington was deserted at 1100hrs this morning for example.

They also sold Vimto as well as a load of other soft drinks straight from the porcelain barrels on the shelf behind the counter, The shop was in at the front of St Marys as I remember. There was another Milk Bar further down the road almost opposite the Hospital (Used to work there, the hospital), but it didn't have the character of the Herbal. I must agree with Walton not being what it was though. My wife and I were back in Liverpool in 2003 for the first time in twenty five years. Does anyone have any info on Walton Park? ie When it was built and all the general things like that. I am guessing the railway had something to do with it as Walton Station is closer to Walton Park than Hornby Road! There is also a walkway between the two as-well.

Any info would be greatly appreciated and full credit will be given on the Walton page!

A STREET of Victorian terraced houses once destined for the wrecking ball has been saved and restored, with the first show home opening today.

Every house on Tancred Road in Anfield, near Liverpool football club’s ground, has been uninhabitable for the last eight years and residents have fought to keep them standing. continues (http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2007/06/27/scheme-saves-houses-destined-for-demolition-64375-19361330/)...

There used to be a Hall in Walton Park hence its proper titile Walton Hall Park. It was demolished in the early 20th century. I think the park was opened proper when the east Lancs was constructed.

It's interesting that nearly everybody was born outside Liverpool.

The family also owned Leighton Hall near Welshpool, Montgomeryshire and seemed to live in both houses at different times of the year. This would explain the Welsh staff. John Naylor was born in Liverpool but his father came from Cheshire. John Naylor for a time in the 1840s lived at the Manor House, Liscard, Wallasey. The family also lived in Rodney St but subsequently converted the house into a branch of the Bank of North and South Wales of which they were directors. This later became the Midland Bank and these days HSBC Bank.

Yes, I noticed the Naylor child was born in Walton and thought that the father might be from Liverpool.
Very interesting to find out how a bank came to be in Rodney Street.
It always seemed to be the only bank in quite a large area.
The ones near the university being comparitively new.
Funnily enough the next nearest bank (apart from Bold Street) was probably the N & S Wales Bank at Great George Place (the building is still there).

Sorry lad! the Herbal Shop went when the Queens Drive Flyover was built! The Town Hall also went too!

Phil: Thanks for the link, wont be working on it tonight ( :PDT_Aliboronz_24: )as I am going out but will start working on Walton tomorrow.

I hate to bump and double post but the aforementioned Flickr update is now up and ready for you great guys to look at. A few questionmarks over some of the pubs shown there; more notably The Stuart.

Enjoy!

PS: Phill, the attachment was very interesting but the Walton Park I was talking about was Walton Park off Rice Lane. I should have been more clearer as to which Walton Park I requested some info on. In which case I do apologise for any confusion.

You still haven't been clear enough.
I've just looked at your photos (very nice indeed), but can see that you know Walton Park is another rather up-class Victorian housing estate.
We all thought you were referring to a public park with flowers and greenery.

Oh dear! Yes, I was talking about a small Victorian housing development off Rice Lane. Had I been referring to the park with trees and grass, I would have said "Walton Hall Park" as that is it's official name.

I think the next update will be on my side of the water; little can go wrong there one hopes!

Many thanks to everyone for sharing their local knowledge; this forum has been listed in the Bibliography for the Walton page.

All the best

Russ

We know "Walton Hall Park" is its official name, but we were too polite to pick you up on what was thought to be a mistake.

Youngsters brandish guns in vile gang internet video

Oct 24 2007 (http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2007/10/24/) by Caroline Innes, Liverpool Daily Post

TWO months after 11-year-old Rhys Jones was tragically shot dead, youngsters from Liverpool are still glorifying gang violence and gun crime in shocking videos posted on internet websites.

The latest, posted on YouTube this week, shows members of Walton’s City Road gang showing off their arsenal of weapons – including different guns, knives, samurai swords, knuckle dusters and pit bull terriers – to a rap music background track.

After discovering the video, the Daily Post alerted Merseyside police. After reviewing the footage, they have now vowed to identify the individuals featured in the film and bring them to justice. more (http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2007/10/24/youngsters-brandish-guns-in-vile-gang-internet-video-64375-19998751/)

But only after they've sorted out the paperwork mountain they've got.

Was round by the Black Bull yesterday...

Longmoor Lane, Warbreck Moor

When did the Aintree Institute go??? I was somewhat shocked to see that it was no longer with us!

Just incase some of you are wondering where this was taken, The Black Bull pub is just off to the left, and Tesco Metro is just behind me.

It happened in June (I know because I mentioned it on another thread). Very quickly - just over a weekend and without anyone seeming to have advance notice.

Have to say that it had been allowed to become a complete eyesore.

Thanks for that Geoff!!

Cant remember the last time I was round this way, Used to be often when going to and from Tynedale, but as I have come home pernamently, my acquaintance with this great part of the city has some what dropped!

Whats going to happen to the site?? For some reason, I don't see flats as something that would be built here, maybe a commercial unit???

Spent the first couple of years of my life living with one Gran (and my parents) in Makin St off County Rd. Then with the other Gran in Phythian St, Kensington. Then a prefab in Speke before a house in Allerton.
Served an apprenticeship at Dunlops in Rice Lane.
So - lots of associations with Walton.

Thanks Geoff! Info would be appreciated if and when!

Sadly, being on the Wirral, I am not privy to such developments going on over the water; hence my surprise at seeing a derelict tract of land!

Just recently heard about Liverpool being awarded City of Culture status and got nostalgic about the place, having left in 1977, so am trailing around t'Internet looking for photos (old and new) of the place I grew up in and its surroundings, namely Northcote Road, Walton. Does anyone have any quick links to sites with photos of that area (excluding this one, which I'm already exploring)?

A recent look at the area on Google Earth suggests that Northcote Infants/Junior School has gone - which saddens me deeply, it was a lovely building back in the day - as has the old railway tunnel near Beaconsfiled Road.

Many thanks.

Mike
