Hunt for gang after assault in city park
by Mike Hornby, Liverpool Echo
A MAN suffered serious head injuries in an attack in Liverpool’s Sefton park.
The 41-year-old was badly beaten up near the cafe at the centre of the park in Aigburth last night.
Police said his condition in the Royal hospital remained serious but was not life-threatening.
Officers are awaiting doctors’ permission before interviewing him.
An appeal for witnesses has focused on a group of youths seen running away from the scene shortly after the assault at around 11.45pm.
The area of the park has been sealed off for forensic examinations and around five officers were guarding the scene today.
Police have placed several metal covers over a wide area to cover spots of blood.
They were also searching undergrowth, although police have not said if a weapon was used.
A spokeswoman said: “Officers were called to the park at 11.45pm when the victim was discovered by a member of the public.
“The victim remains in hospital in a serious condition.
“Officers believe he has been subjected to a serious and vicious assault and we are keen to trace a group of youths who were seen running away from the area.
“These youngsters appear to be key to this investigation.
“Lark Lane is a busy area with lots of restaurants and pubs, and we are confident that a number of people may have seen them in time before and after the assault.”
Police said attacks in Sefton park remained extremely rare, but are appealing for anyone with information about this incident to contact the Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111.
