I went to Tampa Downs race track yesterday and, for the first time that I can remember I came away winning. We only stayed for ten races (out of twelve) and I had lost money on nine races. On the last race I bet a trifactor but forgot to box it (bet it each-way) and to my great surprise the horses came in in order. I won almost $700.00 dollars. Later the same day we had reservations at the local dinner theatre at the Italian Cultural Centre. Showing was a one-off for St. Patrick's Day of Juno and the Peacock, the Sean O'Casey play based very loosely on the Aesop fable. Before the show and after dinner, the compare, a comedian, organised a contest as to who had the best Irish accent with the prize being the whole evening for free for your group (our group was six people), which included dinner, drinks and the show. The judges were the audiance who voted by applause. We were asked to utter a phrase or sentence recognisibly Irish. My phrase was "When Irish eyes are smiling, they've got jobs in Liverpool".
My accent won. I beat out a number of Americans trying to speak in an Irish accent but strangley enough, I also beat out a lady from Newry, a lady from Cork, a couple from Portrush and a guy from Blacksod Bay in Mayo. The Scouse accent was deemed, according to our fellow patrons, as the best Irish accent in the theatre.
